Flights into Christchurch. . .
We're finalizing the flight itinerary for our Feb.-March 2012 trip to Sydney and South Island, New Zealand. We're scheduled to fly into and out of Christchurch. With the aftermath of the earthquakes, which sadly hit the city, are there unaffected hotels open at the airport? Also, are there enough sights open to enjoy a few hours there on our arrival day? Thanks for information on this from anyone who has recently been to Christchurch.

The Copthorne Commodore near the airport wasn't affected. We stayed there years ago, so I don't have any recent experience regarding this particular hotel though.
We were in Christchurch in June - we intentionally avoided the city center, but we saw very little evidence of earthquake damage near the airport and along the fringes of the city.

Thanks for your prompt response, Melnq8. We need to finalize our "on hold" itinerary, intending to use FF miles, or lose it. With all of your wonderful feedback, we feel quite comfortable with our plan.

The airport side of the city was largely unaffected by the earthquakes, tomarkot. As Mel has mentioned, the Commodore is open, and is only a 5 minute drive from the airport. There are, as well, quite a few motels in that part of town.
Most of the parks and gardens are open to visitors, but it will be a long time yet before the cordon around the central city is lifted. It has just been announced that the Crowne Plaza will have to be demolished (and will not be rebuilt by the present owners), and the fate of a number of other hotels has yet to be decided. Certainly, spend a few hours here, but not a few days.

Thanks, kiwi_rob, for the added detail about Christchurch. We're considering just booking the Commodore when we book our airline itinerary. We'll just rent our car at the airport upon arrival in early afternoon, spend the remainder of the day enjoying some of the gardens, and be ready to get an early start the next day to drive the Arthur's Pass Road.
