beach resort sydney

Any suggestions for a beach based hotel that will allow us to day-trip into Sydney?

Not exactly a hotel, but a Sydney instituion for many years. Kims Beach Hideway one hour north of Sydney at www.kims.com.au may be what you are looking for.

Just checked the website and my, it looks beautiful. But can you really drive from Terrigal, let alone a location north of that, to Sydney in an hour?

I work with folk who live in Terrigal and drive to St Leonards every day - (they're mad). And I know they can't do it in 40 mins - and can you do St Leonards to the city in 20... I don't think so.

OP - just saying that you should take the claims of the website with a pinch of salt.

Type "Manly" (without the quotes) into Google and have a great time planning.

... and from Manly you have a wonderful ferry ride to the city.
North of Manly you have all of Sydney's northern beaches, accessible by car or bus, and the possibility of ferry [or other boat] on lovely Pittwater.
