What's closed in Bangkok on New Year's Day?
My Husband and I will be in Bangkok from Dec 28th through Jan 2, 2007.
I was hoping to get a sense of what's opened and what's closed of the major sightseeing attractions so that I can plan my itinerary accordingly....
In some previous posts several fodorites suggested some things might be closed on New Year's Day and I need help figuring this one out...

Many of the stores close for several days around both christmas and new year. Sightseeing is not a problem. Jim Thompson store is one store that is always open. If you are going to Bangkok specifically to shop you're not going at a good time. I would do whatever shopping you want to do on the 28,29 and 30 -- most things will be open those days although some stores may begin to close on the 30th.

Greetings from Shenyang.
Some small shops may close around that time, but shopping centers are all open, as are almost all public tourist sights. You can pretty much plan sightseeing around that time as if New Years day was just another day.
At the Grand Palace, the throne rooms will be closed, the same as on weekends, but the rest of the palace should be open, as will be Vimanmek and all the temples.

Most large shopping centres and many larger shops will be open over the holiday but shut earlier than usual because of the celebrations. Don't expect a taxi unless you want to be ripped off.
There is a big New Year's celebration that starts sometime around 21:30 on Dec 31st outside the World Trade Centre on Ratchaprarop near Phloen Chit. Big crowds, watch your pockets.
