Thailand 3 weeks in February
We plan to visit Thailand to visit our daughter working in hospital in Huahin. We will stay 3 nights ? Bangkok then Hua Hin then tour Chiang Mai and wherever else. We are 60 and enjoy walking and exploring as opposed to sitting on beach.
Would appreciate any suggestions re places not to miss-interesting as opposed to touristy and any recommendations for hotels in bangkok and hua hin. I prefer cheaper character places to big expensive.

i am sure you daughter has told you it is very hot in thailand, so walking sometimes is very difficult.... in bkk i prefer the skytrain and taxis (very cheap)..
what is your hotel budget?? in bkk any hotel on the river is a bonus but they are quite expensive....you could look at centre point silom....majestic grande.... bangkok holiday inn on plenochit... rembrandt.... marriott courtyard....
in hua hin i love the hyatt.... but i think your daughter could find you a nice place there...
get yourselves a good guidebook

For Hua Hin I would definitely go for a beach side hotel. Since your daughter is working in a hospital there she can probably get you a better rate then you would from outside of Thailand. Ask her to check around but I would highly recommend that you splurge on a beach side hotel on the main Hua Hin beach.
For things to do while in Hua Hin:
I like to visit the Sam Roi Yod national park - http://www.dnp.go.th/parkreserve/asp...sp?npid=8&lg=2
Go to the Phraya Nakhon Cave while in the park, take 1/2 a day by a combination of boat and trekking and do the Khao Daeng Canal cruise. All very inexpensive and beautiful.
Another place that I like to visit for lunch and relaxation is a local vineyard own by the owners of Red Bull drinks. http://www.huahinhillsvineyard.com/
I think the above is plenty for 3 nights in Hua Hin but other attractions there is the night market and just chill on the beach.

I have just returned from 3 weeks and just posted my report, with places to stay.
In Bangkok we stayed initially in the Riverside area... loved watching life go by on the river and easily getting to the Sky Train station and other taxi stops along the river. At the end of our trip we stayed on Sukhamvit Rd to be more central for shopping. We stayed at Chatrium Suites on the river and On8 Sukhamvit. In Chiang Mai we stayed at Pak Chang Mai guest house. See the report for more info
Feel free to shoot me any questions. Have fun.

thanks again. I feel totally frazzled spending hours looking at hotels in bangkok. Decided maybe not river, maybe suites but only 2 of us, do not want to spend too much eg up to $100 Aus, want good location and simple decor as opposed to over the top.help help help. My partner says just pick one but have been disappointed before!

changemaven What did you think of On8? I walk past it everyday and have been curious. I ate in their cafe one day back in Oct/Nov when I was in BKK. They seem to be busy. It's quite new, having just opened sometime in '09.
Bevzy, you might like Adelphi Suites on Sukhumvit soi 8. It is two years old. Not fancy. A studio should be in your price range, if you can get a room. I always book the one bedroom exec apartment because I like having the washing machine for doing my clothes every couple of days. This place seems to get booked out. Their web page has a scrolling line of text that claims they are listed in the top 20 on trip advisor... I can't verify that... but I've been staying here everytime I'm in BKK since Feb 08. I'm happy here. It feels like home each time I return. Same friendly staff. The location is ideal, as is On8 that changemaven mentioned.
February is a good time to be in Thailand. Enjoy!

Carol, I have eaten several times at the On8 Cafe. Service is fast and friendly, good internet connection, and the food is not bad. They do seem to have a steady flow of customers and not all of it is from the adjoining hotel. Have not checked the rooms yet.
