Ryokan suggestion near Tokyo/Kyoto/Osaka?
We'll be spending 10 days in the Tokyo and Kyoto areas in September/October. Does anyone have a recommendation for an overnight somewhere between the two or on the way to Osaka from Kyoto? Possibly a cheaper priced Ryokan other unique accommodation in a more rural area? Thanks for your suggestions.

Your best bet is to contact one of your fellow Fodorites Kim Japan. She live and works there and has a slew of that sort of info. also an invaluable source of other Japan related info. The best was to contact her is [email protected]. She arrange Ryokans and small houses for many of us last year. Wee were all very pleased with the reasonableness of the prices if you know where to look.

Here is a good website where you can learn about ryokans.

Under Accomodations, you would be looking in the Kanto (Tokyo) and Kansai (Kyoto). Hakone would be a good area for a ryokan stay and onsen visit. You would travel thru Chubu, so consider the Tsumago link.
There is a lot of good info under the Resources tab. In particular:

This ryokan will introduce you to Hakone. Moderately priced and conveniently located this ryokan will also show you the Japanese culture you desire.
