Tokyo to Kyoto

We will be staying in Tokyo and would like to make a day trip to Kyoto. We cannot spend the night in Kyoto. Please give suggestions.
Thanks

The Shinkansen takes as little as 2:11 between Tokyo and Kyoto. First train departs Tokyo at 6am, last one returns from Kyoto at 9:34pm. That gives you over 13 hours in Kyoto maximum.

Hi

Yes, the Shinkansen is a fast and efficient way to get to Kyoto. We did not take a day trip but we took the Shinkansen quite a lot when we went to Japan. Here is a trip report from Japan and maybe you can find some useful info there Here is the link: http://gardkarlsen.com/japan_tokyo.htm

If at all possible, i would recommend spending at least a full day there. Kyoto is one of my favorite cities in japan and there's simply so much to see and do, especially if you're into visiting temples. Either way, enjoy1
