Private transfer from Amritsar to Wahga Border
Can anyone suggest a travel/tour company that might do a private transfer from Amritsar to
Wagha Border? We really don't want a tour and don't want a tour guide.
Any pointers, advice, and options would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Staed at Ranjit Svaasa in 2009. They arranged driver and fuide. The guide explained what was happening before we arrived. It's a complicated security situation, so be patient. Do your homework beforehand.

There is taxi stand near Golden Temple and they charge ~800 to 1,000 Rs, depending on type of car for a 4 seater private car from Amritsar to Wagah Border and back. Its pre-paid taxi stand, fix rates.

Get your hotel of stay to organize the trip to Wagah. Though it will cost you a bit more than the open taxi stand, but then you will be safe as the driver is known to your hotel. Nobody likes a crook who may want to make more money than due and find excuses to do so. And be sure a crook can find many!!
It takes about 45 minutes to reach Wagah. Ask your driver to get to the parking closest to the gate. He will need to keep an eye for you when you arrive back from the flag lowering ceremony. You will need to keep your belongings in the cab, including your mobile phone, as the security is very tight. All the more reason to pick up a reliable driver who is known to the hotel you are staying with.
Do not forget to try the Amritsar fish-Fry at the Makhan's (Lawrence road)or the Black Dal (lentil) at Bharawan-da-dhaba (Brothers Eatery) very close to Golden Temple!
Happy Hunting!

We got a driver and guide through Ranjit Svaasa before we arrived in India. The drive is about 45 minutes. Guide took us up to a certain point, but then we were on our own as she wasn't allowed to enter the final destination.
The ceremony takes place on the grounds of the Punjab State Police, not the Indian Army. There is a seating area (concrete benches) for VIPs which we were considered to be. Everyone is packed in, nationalism running high. Quite a spectacle!

I've seen the ceremony from both sides, on the Pakistan side with a Pakistani friend and on the Indian side with a fellow tourist friend. Interestingly, both sides have "VIP" sections, seats closest to the border and both times we were shown to those seats. No reason apparent except I was obviously a foreigner and my local friend, one would suppose, by association. She was very pleased. This was 10 years or so ago and I'd be interested to know if the discrimination is still at work.
