Private tour guide in Penang
Can anyone suggest a private driver/guide in Penang? Will be there just one day and do not want to do any of the ship's excursions. Other suggestions for Penang, near the end of August, would be appreciated....i.e. a good restaurant, what to do and see.

Fauncey, it's a good idea to get a private guide bcoz you tend to see more places rather than spending time navigating the maze of Penang road. Here are some suggestions;
CULTURE & HERITAGE
- Nyonya Museum at Church Street
- Khoo Kongsi Temple near Armenian Street
- Thai Wat Chayamangkalaram behind Bangkok Lane
- Little India near Beach Street
- Clan jetties at Chain Ferry (Unesco awarded site)
- Fort Cornwalis near Swettenham Pier
- Butterfly Farm at Teluk Bahang
LOCAL SCENE
- Penang road
- Pulau Tikus
- Night bazaar at Batu Ferringhi
FOOD
- Hot Wok Restaurant near Tanjung Tokong, good Nyonya cuisine
- Eden Restaurant, Hutton Lane, off Penang Road.
- The Ship at Batu Ferringhi
I doubt you could cover all these places in 1 days. The unfortunate thing is, guides who are usually found within touristy places (hotel, ship harbour .. etc) offer cheap fee but take one to expensive restaurants, parks and souvenir shops for commissions. Also they may group you up with other travellers to cut cost. Not many guides understand what "private tour" means.
Are you stopping over Penang by a holiday cruise ship? If so, I believe your ship should be harbouring at Swetteham Pier.

Thank you for the info regarding Penang, but really am looking for the NAME of a tour operator with whom someone is familiar. Do you live on Penang? Yes, I will be there for just one day--coming on a cruise ship. There would be three of us looking to find a private guide/driver. If not, would you recommend renting a car for a day?

I live in mainland Ipoh, very near to Penang island. I go to Penang on monthly basis for banking matters. I wouldn't recommend that you rent a car and self-drive in Penang because traffic and local drivers are notorious; especially the motorbikes. Cars are right-hand drive. Taxis are supposed to use metered fare but most just switch it off. By the way, on what day are you coming in August? Maybe we can rendevous if it coincide with my monthly trip. I can drive you around then; hopefully my small 190E Mercedes can fit 3 of you! Write to me at [email protected].

Hot Wok served good food n really enjoy the tumis curry fish n assam prawns a lot. Recently been there food taste awesome but i found that people in penang doesn't much appreciate it. Penangnites will prefer to have steamboat or fusion, been to this flame steamboat wasn't good compare the one we used to had in Island Plaza COCA thai steamboat. Hope Penang will always have the good food around.
