Northwest seat selection- how to get good seats
Northwest just opened the seating selection for our flights to BKK in June. The flight from Seattle to Tokyo is an Airbus A330-200 and I would like seats with the power port. However, I cannot get 2 seats together as all the aisle seats are Coach Premium (have to pay a fee 24 hrs. before departure) or reserved for Worldperks Elite. Also the return from Tokyo to Det. is a 747-400 so I wanted the 2 seats in the back Rows 63-65 for the extra floor space. But only 1 of those seats is available now. Any chance I can get the Coach Premium seat without paying the extra fee?

When I called NW to ask about the seats, they told me $50 or $100 for the select seat (I think it was $100 for international flights). But I would need 2 of the select seats because we have 4 people, so that doubles the amount.

Choice Seats are $50 Trans-Pacific, $25 for intra-Asia. They charge by each segment.
The idea of the program is to get you to pay $$$ for those seats in advance. If you don't want to pay, then you just have wait until check-in and see what you may get at that time.

Well, let me clarify. You can only pay for those seats within 24 hours of departure. Since elites can grab those seats for free, unless you pay for them, you're unlikely to get them without paying.
And "regular" premium seats can only be pre-assigned to elites. However, during check-in, some of those may be opened up. And you may be able to get those at that time.
