Medical excavation insurance

Never before purchased it. Did buy cancellation insurance for illness for another trip since so much had to be prepaid. Never made that trip but got money back. Now
going to Bhutan and think it will be necessary to be taken to Nepal or India if medical problem happens. Who do I buy this insurance from? A good company I hope. I am not expecting being flown back to NYC unless the worst happens. Please advise.

I think you mean evacuation, lol. See this thread http://www.fodors.com/community/asia...e-169668-2.cfm - which includes a discussion of both medical and evacuation insurance.

I just bought from Liaison Traveler, but I needed a six month policy. For shorter time frames you could look at Travel Assistance International.

There have been many discussions of med evac insurance here on the Asia board. Here is a long thread with lots of good information:

BTW, if I got sick in Bhutan (or Nepal), I'd ask to be flown to Bangkok rather than Nepal or India.

Well, it's getting late here on the US east coast, but aren't you on the west, Kathie?

I hear that Delhi has some good hospitals, no?

I can't use the time as an excuse here in Seattle, I can only complain about the heat.

Yes, Delhi is supposed to have some good hospitals. But the recent news about new "superbugs" coming from Indian hospitals would make me want to choose elsewhere if I could. The superbugs have acquired genes that allow them to be immune to virtually all antibiotics, and they can exchange genes with other bacteria. scary.

Yes, I think I read the same article... I sent it to some friends with the subject "Be very (very) afraid". While I'm IN India, I doubt I could get myself evacuated to Bangkok, though, but the OP might stand a better chance from Bhutan.

So true. Despite my preference, I expect if I fall and break my ankle in Sikkim, I'll be headed to Kolkata. From Bhutan, there is a non-stop flight to Bangkok, so it would be a logical med evac destination.
