Help with Chiang Rai hotel

We have been recommended by a travel agent to stay at the Anantara Golden Triangle when we visit Chiang Rai in March but we're concerned it may be a little costly and wondering about alternatives which will seem more "Thai-like".
I'm considering the Phu Chaisai Mountain Resort & Spa and the Legend Hotel.
Does anyone have feedback about any of the above or other good alternatives?
Thanx

The Anantara at the Golden Triangle is really fabulous. The architecture and decor is very Thai and the views to Burma and Laos are lovely. I'd go back there in a heartbeat. They have a fabulous spa, and a great cooking class, as well as having an Elephant Conservation Center on the grounds.

Sorry, I've not heard of the other place you mention.

Anantara and Legend are in the same price range. Anantara is an hour from Chiang Rai, Legend is in Chiang Rai. Phu Chaisai is also a ways outside of the city. It depends entirely on what you want to do during your stay...relaxing and elephants and nature Anantara, City exploring Legend, relax in a quiet place Phu Chaisai.

We are also staying at the Anantara in March. The lowest rate we could find was a deal with Small Luxury Hotels of the World www.slh.com which was $184 ++ per night with "VIP" treatment and a complimentary upgrade. This bettered the rate on any of the usual websites, agents or indeed the hotel site.slh is free to join and does sometimes some good deals.

I really don't think Anantara and Legend are in the same price range. We paid about $80.00 for an upgraded room with private jacuzzi and breakfast at Legend. Anything at Anantara for our dates, which were high season, was about 3 times that much. We loved the Legend. I have previously posted a review, which you can find by clicking on my name.
