furniture shopping thailand

We are interested in purchasing a large cabinet (either Thai or Chinese antique) while on our trip to Thailand next month. We will be in Bangkok, Phuket, and perhaps Chaing Mai area. Does anyone know of reputable furniture dealer who ships to the states in any of these areas? We are looking for a cabinet to hold a wide screen plasma and audio/video equipment...(Why buy an "entertainment center" in the states, when we can have a beautiful memory of our upcoming trip to Thailand.) Any ideas?

a couple of warnings for you:

the shipping costs are astrnomical, are you aware of this??

often the wood, which is very use to the humid climate, will crack in the dry us climate, especially if you have heat in your house....

chiang mai is a great place to look for hand-made modern reproductions....

river city shopping center in bkk has a number of very reliable antique dealers---3rd and 4th floors....

Thank you.. You've been a wealth of information as we plan this trip. We are staying at the Royal Orchid for the first 4 nights of our Bangkok stay, so we can check out the River City shops easily.

i should have added that two trips ago to bkk, we spent one whole day visiting a number of shops for furniture, mostly custom made....we came away quite disappointed....the shipping costs were the major problem./....we saw a number of items we liked (we don't need anything after 30+ years of marriage),and thought were very reasonable, and thought we might like, but came away with not a thing...several of the shops were on sukumvit road....we got all of them out of "the treasurers and pleasurers of thailand"--- impact guidebook

Well, we're celebrating our 35th...so I know what you mean....(guess that should have been self evident, since we are looking for entertainment centers, not starter home stuff..) Anyway, I just came back from visiting my son in Charlottesville Va, and couldn't believe that there were 3 dealers of antique Asian furniture in that basically college town. Go figure. Only want to buy in Thailand if it's a memory that won't disintegrate in 3 months. (shipped Chinese warriors back from Xian China two years ago....they lasted about 6 months before literally falling apart before our very eyes)....thanks for the input on Thai furniture.

Sopha Lee on Sukhumvit Soi 49 has lovely Korean furniture. Macassar on Skmvt Soi 16 may be worth a dekko. The Jim Thompson main shop on Surawong Rd has furniture on the top floor. Silom Village may have something. River City is great but exp. ENJOY!

Reliable shipping companies at reasonable rates out of BKK and maybe Phuket? What about small items....like a spirit house.....just a wee bit too big for the overhead. Is it just cost prohibitive to send those items home?
