Cheapest Markets?- Hong Kong or Kuala Lumpa

Our family which includes 3 kids in their early twenties are going to Hong Kong for 5 days and having a 2 1/2 day stopover in KL on the way home to Australia.

I have been to Hong Kong before but not KL.
Can anyone give me any idea to the cost difference for the typical tshirts, cds/dvd's, junk jewellery etc that my kids will be interested in shopping for?
Should they hold off for a lot of their shopping until the KL markets or are they similar in price to Hong Kong?
Thanks.

I was in both KL and HK last summer and shopped at markets for similar items (I'm also in my early 20s). I bought dvds in KL and waited to get to HK for imitation handbags. The selection seemed better in HK so I would suggest they shop there and buy anything they can't find in KL later. the key to shopping at any of these places is to bargain, bargain, bargain. when I was shopping in KL, I actually told my friend that I would not buy anything unless the stall owner would bargain with me..it worked! Tell your kids to have a great time, those places are both incredible!

if you're looking for bargains and you're in hk, you might want to consider going across the border to shenzhen for a few hours. it's very popular with hkers. there's a huge .. um .. shopping arcade right by the train station -- heaven for watches, bags, dvds, cds. good quality too from what i could see. remember to bargain, though.

Malaysia is the counterfeit DVD capital of Asia (if not the world). DVDs now run Ringgit 18 - 30 (depending on quality) - that's USD 5 - 7 or so. Have not shopped in HK for DVDs, but KL has got to be the cheapest! Go to the "local" shopping centres such as Lot 10, or there is a fun street market in Chinatown.

Pirated DVDs in KL's Chinatown run RM9-10, depending on how many you buy. Helena, you got ripped off!

They're not the best quality, but fine. We've spent more in some mall shops, but they aren't any better.
I think you've confuse the price of VCDs for DVDs! There is no where on this earth that DVD(pirated or not) cost less than a buck.

I agree. The less than US$1 'DVD' gotta be a VCD.

VCDs work in DVD players, too, just for the record. The easiest way to distinguish them is that a movie on VCD will come on two discs, while a movie on DVD will come on one.

Anyway, Jon, it only "costs" me a one a half hour car ride to go to KL's Chinatown, so despite the fact that I spent $1.36US more each for my DVDs than you did, I still think I got the better deal!

While I haven't found them for UNDER $1, in Shanghai, DVDs (not VCDs) are 10 RMB (sometimes less if you bargain well or buy a lot), which is $1.20 US. As discussed in another thread, many are horrible copies, many are DVDs whose special features don't work, but I also have shelves full of "real" DVDs that I've purchased for $1.20 US.
