cheap places to shop in Tokyo?
Hello,
Does anyone know of any cheap areas/places to shop in Tokyo? I found Harajuku to be the least expensive, but some of the quality of the clothing was not great. I'm also looking for pearls, shoes, or anything else.

Japan is not the place for cheap shopping, and even less so, the capital. If on a holiday there, people will usually include another destination like Hong Kong or Bangkok for shopping. If you are in Japan for some time, it might be worth considering a cheap return trip to Hong Kong to do some shopping.

Just returned from Manila earlier this week. If it's pearls you want, Manila is the place. Real ones, at rock bottom prices at the day "Night Markets" called Tiangge (Tyang-ge) which are in several places in Manila.

Clothes--it's really hard to make recommendation unless we know your tastes/styles. I think Harajuku tends to cater to younger crowds with less emphasis on quality. I've seen nice-looking clothes in Shinjuku areas, both in department stores and along the main street on the eastern side. Though I won't call them cheap. Then of course you can check Uniqlo.
Shoes--not sure if Tokyo is the place to buy shoes. From what I hear, the choices get very limited if you're over size 40 (continental European).
Pearl--I'd be very weary of "cheap" pearls. I presume you mean the real thing? Believe freshwater perals are less expensive but then again I believe it's more Chinese than Japanese?

There are several temple, shrine, and antique markets in Tokyo. The one at Togo shrine is supposed to be particularly good (5 min walk from Hapajuku station, 1st adn 4th Sun. of each month). I have not been to them. I have gone to the temple markets in Kyoto and have gotten great deals on old kimonos, kimono jackets, all kinds of handmade household goods (wooden kitchen items, ceramics, etc.), fabrics, etc.

If you take the subway get off at Ueno station. Go out the front door and across the street to the Ameyoko open market.There are hundreds of stalls selling all kinds of things from fresh seafood to silver jewelry. You can bargain shop there and is the only place I can think of like that in Japan.

Thanks for the market info. Hopefully I'll find some good things in Kyoto. I bought a bunch of pearls in China-not really looking to go there for shopping this time. I wasn't thrilled with the shopping in Beijing either(at the markets anyway).
