Bangkok Spas

I am looking for 1/2-full day spa treatments that are reasonably priced?- not the Oriental Hotel which is expensive

Where are you staying? Presumably you do not want to travel very far? There is an Ananda stand alone spa at 2 locations - one is at Sukhumvit Soi 11 in the President Solitaire service apts, the other at Sukhumvit Soi 24, in a building complex called President Park, right behind the Emporium shopping center and BTS stop. Also take a look at a new spa, Dulaya, www.dulayaspa.com again near Emporium.

I'm sure the places Hobbes suggests are really good choices, and in addition, you might want to take a look at the Mandara Spa listing at the Royal Orchid Sheraton-although it is expensive as well-but a bit less than the Oriental, I believe. The Spa has beautiful polished teak floors, with some water lily fountains, and an outdoor serenity garden. The spa services were quite good.

I will be staying at the Crowne Plaza in Bangkok. I was hoping to arrange a relaxing day for spa treatments at a reasonable cost. I will be on tour to Vietnam/Cambodia ending up in Thailand and since I visited Thailand in 1996 I don't want to do the usual "tourist" sightseeing.

The spa at the Shangri La was decadent, but could be expensive. I felt too relaxed when I left to notice such things.
There's a Japanese spa chain, if you can believe it. for the life of me I can't remember the name of the place, but they were doing facials like a hair salon does perms. Thrifty alternative?

Maybe a definition of "reasonable" would help to narrow it down. What's the price at the Oriental?

Regards,
Craig

I understand the spa at the banyan tree is gorgeous and expect it would be cheaper than that at the oriental.

Looks like the Banyan Tree and Shangri La is fairly expensive and the Dubya Spa seems most reasonable- however I do not know cost of taxi's from the Crown Plaza to the various locations. I was ideally hoping for a 3 hr package for around $65.00 but it loks like I may have to avoid the major hotels.

Jackie-maybe you should think about foregoing the Spa and just have a massage. As I've posted several times, my wife and I have had wonderful massages in our hotel room from the Wat Pho School of Massage. It's *00B for 2 hours if you arrange it at Wat Pho or 750B for 1 1/2 hours if you call them on the phone. It's very relaxing when preceded by a dip in the pool and a shower. It's a great antidote to jet lag stiffness. However, no facials or scrubs or aroma. You need a spa for those. Let us know what you choose and how it was.

Thanks Gpanda- I have some time to figure it out. Doing some websurfing and will also check some guide books. I didn't realize that Wat Po sent masseuses to your hotel? I would however prefer a more tradional swedish type massge. Had a Thai massage in 96' & hurt for several days. Wat Po fee's of 750 baht are very reasoanle-thats about$20 to come to the hotel- Do you have a phone number? Thank you for your help.

Wat Po does only Thai massage. Both Dulaya and Ananda, Soi 24 are VERY close to Emporium BTS stop - IMO in Bkk if u can take a train u should try to as it is ALWAYS faster than a taxi given the traffic. I have had spa treatments in Bkk and they are excellent. Try to fit it into your schedule Spas are also beautiful - among the best in the world.

taxis are dirt cheap...$2-3 would take you anyplace you want to go in bkk...i took a one hour ride in may and it was $5. i combine the skytrain and taxis to get where i want to go....

one caution also....you often get what you pay for....although having said that, hotels do charge much more than other places, but they cater to the western, international trade...

Jackie-just as a point of reference-the Holiday Inn is about a 7 min. walk, if that, to the Shangri-La and Oriental hotels -the latter two hotels are very close. You didn't say whether you checked out Mandara Spa- which is at both the Marriott Bangkok Resort (which isn't really accessible to you) and the Royal Orchid Sheraton-ROS is a very short taxi ride from Holiday Inn, and the Skytrain is practically in back of the H.Inn, so you have easy accessibility to different places around BKK-partic. the spas Hobbes mentioned.

I am confused about the posting reply of the Holiday Inn? I will be at the Crowne Plaza-how far is that to the Royal Orchid, Oriental and other 1st class hotels metioned with spa's or the Dulaya,Ananda or Banyan Tree. It looks like I will book at one of the hotels and also book for the Wat Po masseuse to my room. Is a suggsted tip the same as in the states 15%-20%?

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR IMPUT

hotel name: the hotel on silom road used to be called the holiday inn crowne plaza, but changed its name just to the holiday inn about 2 years ago....or maybe it changed its name to crowne plaza....in any case it is one and the same hotel and is at the foot of silom road not far from new road...

the marriott IS in fact easily accessible to you...go to the skytrain station (taskim---end of the line on the river) and take the marriott boat every 15 minutes to the hotel for free..

there is a new hotel being built on sukhumvit road, crowne plaza, but i don't think it will be ready by the time you go....BUT you could be staying there...

IN case your bill is over 1500 baht you do not need to strictly follow the 15-20% tip - 200 baht should be fine. I am not pushing any stand alone spa but would only say Thailand is the home of spas - stand alone spas are often as luxurious and fancy as hotels. Enjoy whatever you choose!

At hotel spas, a 10% service charge is added to your bill. No further tip is expected.

Jackie,
There is a lovely and quite reasonable spa just steps away. If you are staying at the Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza on Silom, right next door is the Galleria. There is a day spa called Sense and Spirit that I highly recommend. I had 3 treatments that lasted about 3 1/2 hours for about $84. If you go in the front door(on Silom) and take the first escalator down, the spa is on the right side. Another recommendation is Maria's restaurant. You go past the Galleria and Maria's is in that block. They have all kinds of food-Thai, Chinese, Italian, Vietmanese, and steaks. You will find the prices quite reasonable. We stay at the Holiday Inn often so if you have any questions contact me at [email protected]
