bangkok lunch outside along river- not too pricey?

we are vegetarians who eat our "big" meal at lunchtime. can anyone suggest a place with good food (thai or other)? (buffet ok) also, does anyone know the approx cost of a buffet lunch at the oriental, the peninsula, the shangri-la, or the marriot?

the lord jim at the oriental is $27 at lunch....not sure how veggie it would be....lots of fish, seafood...

that would be near the top price i should think...

there are several restaurants along the river in different places...can't remember names...

suggest that you have some translation done for you that says that you want vegetarian foods only--just a simple statement...your hotel could do this for you...not a problem in hotels but in reg. thai rest. it could be an issue....

send the hotels e-mails and ask them...they often will send you menus as well...

The best way to view the river is to be on it. Riding the ferry up and down is vastly more fun than being seated at a restaurant. You might enjoy hopping from one hotel to another and see which restaurant fits your requirements best. The Oriental, Shangri-la and Royal Orchid Sheraton are separated by only a stop or two on the ferry. The investigation could be fun in and of itself.

You can also eat at the Verandah at the Oriental which is both outside and inside. It's ala carte, quite reasonable and has lots of vegetarian items.

My husband is vegetarian and we have lived in Bangkok for a few months without any problem in any restaurants. Tell them you are "jay" which is a variant of Jain and conveys that you are vegetarian. Also, when you say veg you need to clarify no seafood/fish (as sometimes they have seen vegatarians who eat seafood) and whether or not you eat eggs (my husband does not). We found Thais eateries very accomodating - even at places llike Le Dalat where the menu did not have much veg selection if my husband asked for some non veg item without the meat they would prepare it. Prices at the hotels you mentioned depend on which restaurant you select eg at the Oriental the Verandah suggested by Gloria is indeed reasonable at approx 4-500 baht per head. Le Normandie the fine dining French place on the other hand is one of the most exp dining establishments in Bkk. Buffet lunches are not the norm everywhere in Thai hotels but a la carte in coffee shops should be within 500 at most places.

Why not take a boat down to Nonthanburi (sp.). You get away from the pollution and the tourists. There's a wonderful "floating" restaurant there.

We had a fantastic meal at the Shangri-La Thai retaurant right next to the river. It was a set menu and really tasty but I can't remember how much it was but it wasn't that expensive. It wasn't a buffet either.
