asian honeymoon in august/september

We had originally wanted to go to Thailand for the honeymoon, but we are being told we don't want to risk the rainy weather...are there enough parts of thailand not affected or should we simply think along non-asian lines like greece, hawaii, etc...

The island of Phuket off the west coast of Thailand would be worst affected by rain at that time. However, Bangkok, the hill areas to the north in Chiang Mai and the beach areas on the east coast and outlying islands like Koh Samui would be better in August and early September, although rain starts to move in towards the latter part of September. If your plan is to have a lot of beach time, then you probably would be better off in another destination; however if you don?t mind some rain and want to see a city like Bangkok as well as some rural areas and beaches, then August and September would be OK.

Bali is also a very good destination and you will have virtually no chance of rain in those months.

Australia is also a good choice, warm to hot temps and virtually no rain along the Gold Coast (Great Barrier Reef), Sydney will be a bit cooler but still great weather.

I would not go to Greece or any coastal destination in Europe (I live here) in August or September as it is very, very crowded as those are the main vacation months.

Take a look at weatherbase.com and worldclimate.com for historical average temps and rainfall for places in the months you are considering.

I would go...rain or no rain...Thailand is great. I usually go to Bangkok either in Dec/Jan or March...but just went in August and from now on I'll go in August....a lot fewer people and great hotel prices. There were a few monsoon-rain type downpours, but nothing major and I never got caught up in one. You just do as the Thais do and wait until the rain stops instead of heading out in it. It usually doesn't last too long. Plus it's warm rain. Happy Travels!

How about Bali? It has the gorgeous beaches you seem to want as well as wonderful sightseeing and culture. And it's not their rainy season.

August is a popular month for Koh Samui, the heavy rains effect the West Coasts, Phuket, krabi etc, as Koh Samui is in the Gulf of Thailand the climate is different, although you may get some rain July and August are busy for Samui as it has reasonably fine weather.

vietnam would also be a great choice - i spent 10 days there last august and only incurred two days of rain (but just tropical showers that blew in and out). the beaches were stunning (i have been to thailand and bali), countryside gorgeous, people lovely, food delicious and just fascinating to see how the country is doing. i stayed in top hotels which were great....but also very inexpensive.

To get a true feel of the tropics you should go on the rainy season when the humidity is high and the atmosphere is intense.

Hi

My wife and I have been to Thailand twice on vacation...and both times in September. Yes, this is a part of the wet season in Thailand so you might get rain on a daily basis but normally it doesn't rain all day long. I have posted trip reports with pictures from our trips to Thailand on my personal homepage gardkarlsen.com and you will see that it is possible to have a good time in Thailand even in the wet season. It is a great destination ;-) Get in touch if you have any comments or questions
