Adelphi Suites
Good Morning, Fodorites!
Carol has written great things about these suites on Sukhumvit, and we are seriously considering staying there on our winter trip to BKK. Has anyone else stayed there, and will you please share your experiences?
Also, what about recommendations for Phuket?
Thanks once again.

Sandra, we just got from Bangkok and stayed Asoke Sofitel. It was amazing, we considered Adelphi but are glad we chose this place. It's just down Soi 19 from the Asoke BTS. We paid 4,000 baht per night which included all taxes and two buffet breakfasts. The room was huge and the views from the pool were fantastic. 50 yards away is Bangkok Kitchen where we had two great meals for next to nothing. I highly recommend this place.

Haven't stayed at the hotel Mike recommends, but we did just stay at the Adelphi, based on Carol's comments. We stayed for six nights and had a very good time there. It was very close to the Nana BTS station which was convenient. They had a nice buffet breakfast included. The rooms are newly done in a modern zen sort of feeling. Soi 8 is fairly quiet, so no undue traffic noise. There is a good Italian restaurant and a good Thai restaurant located there, as well as Rojo's, located in the hotel.
As for the price, 2 nights at the Peninsula cost us way more than the 6 nights at the Adelphi (of course it's comparing apples and oranges, but it really was a good value for the money). However, if you are lay around the pool people, which we aren't, it isn't a very big one at all.

Sandra,
How upscale or "basic" are your wants for Phuket? That will help with recommendations.
I really like the Kata Thani Resort on Kata Noi beach, and I also LOVE LOVE LOVE Mom Tri's Villa Royale which is overlooking (not "on" Kata Noi Beach (but a short walk down some stairs to get to the beach).
The villas at Mom Tri's are very expensive, very lux, very pampering, very quiet. The Kata Thani is big with several large pools and lots of families. Two very different experiences.

Thanks to each of you for your opinions. I appreciate them all.
Carol, I have looked at the availability in Phuket, and am having a hard time getting a "feel" for it since this will be new for us. I think the Boathouse is out of the question as we are both in our 70s and I have difficulty with my knees -- surgery scheduled next month. So, something on the beach will work better for us. We are looking for something very clean, some amenities, of course, and in the $150-$200 range. Is this asking too much, or do I have to change my expectations?
We are waiting for the results of my surgery to make definite plans, but I just "know" that I will be ready to hit the roads pretty quickly. I can hardly wait to get back to Thailand.
Again, thanks. The Adelphi in BKK is pretty much a "done deal," so Phuket is my next project.
What about Le Meridien?

I don't know what the price is for the Kata Thani on Kata Noi Beach, but it would be a great choice (other than that you would have to grab a taxi outside the door of the resort if you wanted to shop or eat elsewhere, as there is really very little else on that beach.
I'm sure you will like the Adelphi Suites. I'm so looking forward to going back there again (last half of August if I can swing it, and then again at Christmas time).

Carol:
As it stands now, it is possible that we will be in Thailand during December '08 and January '09. Maybe we will be able to meet for a drink or dinner, particularly if we are at the Adelphi at the same time.
Can't wait for December.
