I just bought a nice piece of carry on luggage. But, its size may exceed the limits. It measures 23"-15"-9". I'm 2" over the overall limit. Will I be able to get away with it?<BR><BR>Thanks for your response.

There is no "overall limits." You'll have to check with your specific airline, either on their web site or by phone. The airlines all have different size limits. Some have very strict weight limits, too.

That is incorrect. There is a "univeral" carry-on size. The dimensions, when added, cannot exceed 45". That is why most of the manufacturers make a wheeled carry-on that is 22"x9"x14". However, you can often get away with more. but if they put you to the "bin" test, the largest size that will fit is what is referenced above. So, you pays your money and you takes your chances.

Sorry, Carson, but a check of just two web sites shows you're wrong. British Airways has a maximum of 22 x 16 x 8 while USAirways allows 22 x 16 x 10.

I think you missed my point, Jim. The point is, what is the largest carry-on that would be allowed on ANY airline. The sizes you gave exceed 45", yes, but would not "make the cut" on some carriers if put to the bin test. So sure, you could buy the bigger bag and do fine on BA and maybe some others, but on a number of domestic U.S. carriers it wouldn't fly. Would you want a bag that you know works on any airline or just some?

Carson, if you'll read the OP, Mike said that he already owned the suitcase, so the question is NOT "what is the largest carryon that would be allowed on any airline." Mike asked if his particular carryon would be accepted, and the answer is: Maybe, it depends on the airline. Our friend "xxx3" was NOT incorrect in stating that the airlines all have different size limits. You are citing the smallest case that will be accepted by all the airlines, but frankly that doesn't addresss the question.

Well, no, Jim, I think YOU misunderstood my post. How do you know I was responding to the "OP?" I was addressing xx3, who said there is "no 'OVERALL limits'." This would imply that there is not some universal measure of what will work on ALL airlines, which is not the case. This is a 'thread,' the purpose of which is to allow not only the original question that is raised to be addressed, but a broader forum for discussion that others might find helpful. If I was going to buy a bag, and read this post, it might be useful to know what would work anywhere, as opposed to hopping all over the net looking at every domestic and international carrier's websites.

When I responded to the OP, I assumed that by "overall limits" he was referring to a universal standard. Obviously, there's some size that will work on all the airlines, even the strictest one, but that's not what the OP and I (and I think Jim) were talking about. Carson's 9-inch "standard" would not pass on BA.
