Please help with Delta miles
I need to use my AmEx Delta miles for a SFO/LST/MEL/SFO ticket at the end of Oct. till mid Nov. Delta wants 100,000 points for coach. Is this reasonable? I tried to locate Delta’s website for the miles requirement to each destination, but I am unable to find it.
Delta code-shares with Virgin Australia. How do I use more miles to up-grade to economy plus?
Please help.
Thanks.

You are in luck: 100k miles is indeed the lowest possible award ticket price. Book it now before someone else does!

Forgot ... you cannot use SkyMiles to upgrade to any premium economy product on other airlines, at least I'm 95% sure of that. Check directly with VA to see if they have a low cost way to purchase the upgrade from a Delta award seat.

I couldn't believe it when I went back trying to book 2 tickets for the exact dates, Delta wants 180,000 miles each. That's economy class!
I guess I have to wait another day or two to see if the requirement will go down.
Thanks for the info.

Shopping for a Delta ticket to Europe at this time last year, I found the awards page very inconsistent with points levels jumping around almost daily. Eventually I phoned the awards toll-free number (had to; their computer blew a fuse in the middle of my purchase) and ended up with a much better seat for fewer points.

AmEx really has nothing to do with this. You earn points on AmEx. You earn FF miles on Delta. You can transfer AmEx points to various airline programs. Do you have FF miles or do you have points? You may have different options if you have points.

I used to buy 2 r/t tickets to Europe from Delta with my Delta Skymiles AmEx gold card one year. The next year I would combine miles and points to obtain 2 free r/t tickets to Europe for 50,000 points each. I have been doing this for quite sometime. This year is the free year! I already have about 400,000 points. So my AmEx points have to be used to obtain tickets from Delta.
Thanks for the help. I will check on Delta award toll-free number to see what they can do. My time is not all that flexible because we plan to attend a wedding in Launceston!

Before Delta will help you, you have to put your miles in a Delta FF account. When Delta looks at you, they just see a blank account right now. Delta has recently upped the pricing structure on flights, so what you did in the past...is just that...a thing of the past.

If you are using a Delta AmEx Sky Miles card, you are earning miles, not points. If you are using an AmEx (not Delta branded) you are earning points. AmEx points can be transferred to other airlines. Delta AmEx Sky Miles cannot.
Since Delta's award calendar intentionally doesn't function, you need to search one way by legs starting with the longest. That appears to be LAX/SYD. Then find your longest leg return. After you've located those two legs (make a note of FL#, time), search SFO/LAX one way, etc. After locating all flights, start a new Delta search with each individual leg added(use multi-city function).

Update: After making several attempts, Delta wants from 180000-260000 miles to fly out from SFO and back. Finally I did what kyboubon suggested. We will fly out from LAX to LST (4 hours layover in MEL), LST to MEL. SYD to LAX. That takes 100,000 Delta miles plus $130.10 for taxes & fees for each ticket flying with Virgin Australia. We will buy tickets from SFO/LAX/SFO when there is a promotional between now and October from some low cost airlines. We probably will buy one-way ticket from Jetstar to fly from MEL to SYD.
We will spend 5-6 days in MEL and 5-7 days in SYD.
Thank you all.

Try and fly anyone else but Jetstar as they will nickel and dime you for everything in regards to weight/size of your carry on luggage. They are super strict about the 7KG and it is adding your purse/computer,water bottles with any carry on. Virgin Australia is wonderful so look into them or Qantas to fly around Australia domestically.
