flight advice?

hi all,

so my fiance and i are going to tanzania next july - woohoo!! but i am starting to freak out about flight costs. Right after the flights were available, i checked prices and they were around 2000 for the flights i was looking at. but now i have checked again, and now only a couple weeks later that same combination is ~3300! I am totally freaked out. are they just going to keep climing? or do you think the prices will come down again, eventually? any advice would be appreciated. thank you!

keep checking. try the airlines websites in addition to orbitz, travelocity, cheaptickets etc. put an farewatcher alert from them to your email when the price changes. try the consolidator sites also.

You might also try consolidator websites. Also, safari companies such as Born Free Safaris have special contracts with the airlines for lower prices to Africa. What may happen is that seats that are reserved now may be released later and you would find a less expensive seat, but there are no guarantees that this will happen.

Hi morgiane,

Just last Sunday I booked a flight for July 2007 on Emirates from JFK to Nairobi via Dubai. Total cost for 2 tickets $3400. I booked directly from their website which was cheaper than fares on Kayak, Mobisimo and others. I will have to arrange airfare from Denver to JFK, but that should be about $300 per person. So total cost will be about $2000 per person. Emirates does not fly into Kilimanjaro airport but does fly into Nairobi and Dar es Salaam. Hope this helps.

Morgiane looks like you are in NY. I just looked at NWA and for random dates in July I got 2300.

thanks so much guys. i guess i will wait and watch...and also be a little flexible about the flights and stuff. I had picked out the "perfect flight path/time" a couple months ago, and had just been waiting for the tickets to be available to snatch them up. i may have waited too long...

jules39 - yes i'm flying from NYC. It was in fact an NWA/KLM flight path i was looking at - only 1 stop each way, flying out of JFK to DAR at 6:20pm on Jul 5, back from DAR to EWR on Jul 21 leaving 11:15pm. It seemed the perfect trip (and klm is only major airline that flies into JRO), and was 2 grand...but now it is 3356. I just was so shocked at how much it changed it so little time!

so...if i have to change my thinking & fly into/out of nbo or dar, can someone recommend an airline with good economy seating?

thanks all!

I think you'll be able to get the tickets for close to your original price, just keep checking.

I just went to Tanzania in August and I paid about $1800 for my ticket from New York. I flew KLM out of EWR into JRO and then DAR to EWR. I can't remember exactly but I didn't buy my ticket until this spring sometime, so you have plenty of time.

I just flew Economy to Kigali via Nairobi from DC. My flight from DC-LON-NBO-KGL roundtrip in August was $2300. I booked in late May. I booked through Kenyan Airways in NYC. They put me on Virgin to London and then Kenyan Air to Nairobi. I would HIGHLY recommend their economy service. Virgin is FABULOUS and Kenyan Air was just as good. The flight from London to Nairobi had individual TVs, comfortable seats, etc. You have to book through an office in NYC. Their number is 866-536-9224. I was a little nervous as they charge a 3% fee for credit cards, or you have to send them a bank check. I went the Credit Card route and got my paper tickets 2 days later by FedEX. From what I hear many people prefer Kenya Air economy to KLM's economy. They also allow LONG layovers if you want (my boyfriend had a month-long layover in London and the ticket price was the same).
