Attractions in Cairo and around
Hello,
My family with 2 kids (ages 11 and 13) plan to visit Egypt from Dec. 26th till Jan. 2nd. We plan to do the main attractions in Cairo including the Nile river cruise. Since we will be in Egypt for 8 days, what are other places we can see besides Cairo ?
1) Is traveling to Luxor worth it ?
2) If I want to do some snorkeling, is it possible with a day trip from Cairo ?
3) Is traveling from Cairo by road for any day trips safe ?
Any other suggestions to fill up the 8 days besides Cairo ?
Thanks.

"Worth it" is subjective. Here is an itinerary that hits the highlights. Use it, or the Fodors Egypt guidebook, for lots of help planning.

Actually travel to Luxor is definitely worth it, because straddling the Nile, Luxor is the site of the ancient city of Thebes. On the east bank lies the spectacular Temple of Karnak featuring epic statues, obelisks and lotus-columned halls. Make the most of the expensive by taking a gods-eye view in a hot-air balloon.
If you are planning any day trips from Cairo then try to go Giza Necropolis. The pyramids, together with the Sphinx at the base of the Giza plateau, are the iconic image of Egypt.

Friends,
Thanks for the tips.
Memphis Tours in Egypt offers a private 3 day land tour in Cairo and a 4 night Nile cruise which covers Luxor, Asman and Alexandria. All are 5* accomodations. Cruise is Farah Nile Cruise company.
But this is pricey. $1,300 per person. Is it worth it or can I do it on my own for a lot less I presume ?
Thanks.

Again, worth it is subjective.
Some people would never spend $1300 because it was not enough luxury, others would believe it was entirely too expensive. Look into what is offered for that price. If you want certain hotels or ships, ask for prices with them.
You should negotiate the rate with 4 of you. Most of the prices quoted on private tours are for 2 adults. I've found more affordable options but it depends on which hotels and cruise ships are booked. It's also the most expensive time to travel (everywhere) so be prepared for higher prices during that time.
Doing it on your own might be more difficult than you think. Private guides (few English translations at museums, signs, etc) are important for most outings unless you speak/read Arabic. You can use the group guides on the cruises if you prefer.
Enjoy your trip.

- Luxor is the best place you can visit all over the world.
- its impossible to make snorkeling in one day you need not less 2 or 3 days..
- Egypt is very safe you can travel or walk anywhere anytime.
