Airfare to Tanzania-how to find the best deal?

My fiance and I are planning our honeymoon to Tanzania in early December 2007. We are joining a group for a Kiliminajo climb and safari through Alaska Mountain Guides (has anyone taken this trip?) and are looking to reserve airfare to/from Chicago. How can we find the best deals on aifare? Any help is appreciated! Thank you.....

Kayak.com is good for airfare alone if you cannot find a consolidator. On that line, I suggest you contact a tour operator such as African Serendipity who is based in U.S. and can find consolidator as well as find you a good land operator and guide service in Tanzania.

If you're flying to NBO, check out fares on BA's website. They are at 1300 a person at the moment.

I'm pondering the routing myself. I am thinking about Tanzania in Dec 07 too. But I need to reach JRO. Nothing below 2000 via KLM.. BA doesnt fly to JRO.. And it appears that costs of transfer from NBO to JRO might amount to a bit too...

In my research for my upcoming trip in Sept '07, I found contacting www.NWA.com(northwest/KLM) and www.emirates.com(arab emirates airline)directly got me the best rates/schedules for service b/t JFK and Nairobi(NBO), Kilimanjaro(JRO) and Dar es Salaam(DAR). Emirates does not fly into Kilimanjaro. If you go to the NWA site, you can plug in your destinations and dates and search by price or by the best scheduling.

nwa.com showed the best results from kayak.com for a random week in December from Ohare to JRO. ($1,660)

For Canadians ,I just booked with www.ticketpilot.ca. They offered me the best deals flying from Toronto to London and Dubai.

Hello kdold,

The best consolidator I've found is kayak.com. Just keep in mind that prices may deep a bit as you get closer to the date but then they will jump up again. The reason being that the portion of the flight to London or Amsterdam sells out causing the price listed for the trip to Tanzania to jump up again in price. Also keep in mind that the flight is cheaper when booked as one rather then booking separately to London/Amsterdam then to Tanzania.

Cheers,
Juliet

Just a point of clarification about Kayak. It's not a consolidator and doesn't sell tickets. It's a search engine that looks for fares and displays what it finds, similar to Mobissimo, Sidestep, ITA Software or a number of other sites. You use these sites to find fares and then purchase your tickets directly with the airline, agency, consolidator or whatever entity that's offering it for sale.

Thank you to everyone for the advice, all very helpful. We are set for our flight but found we had to arrive the night before our trek starts. Any recommendations for a hotel near the Kili airport (JRO)?

The KIA Lodge is right outside the JRO airport and reasonably priced. You may, however, wish to be at a hotel closer to Kili, as the drive from the airport to start the climb is about 1/hr.

If flying into JRO, you arrive at 8pm, clear Immigration and can be at a Kili hotel by 10pm. Early enough for a good nights sleep.

Have your tour operator provide prices for Kili hotel options w/transfer from the airport on arrival. Or the KIA Lodge at JRO and transfer next morning to Kili.

Orbitz I saved around $750.00 going thru them. They routed us thru Dubani instead of London or Amsterdam. Good luck.
