Huilo Huilo

$$$$ | Chile Fodor's Choice

This massive eco-tourism complex boasts five hotels, numerous cabins, and several camping sites amid the beautiful temperate forest, rivers, and lakes at the Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve. The three main lodges—Montana Magica Lodge, Nothafagus Lodge & Spa, and Reino Fungi Lodge—are connected by a long, wooden walkway. A fourth, Nawelpi Lodge, is a smaller, more exclusive lodge deeper inside the reserve on the northern side of the Puerto Fuy River. The fifth, Marina del Fuy Lodge, faces Lake Pirehueico and the Mocho Choshuenco volcano. Like nothing you have ever seen before, the surreal Nothafagus Lodge is shaped like a Baobab tree, while Reino Fungi Lodge resembles a giant mushroom. All of the hotels are heavily rustic, with walls made from native woods and the floors from handsome stones. The views from the rooms, looking out on forest with constant bird-singing traffic, are tremendous. Diverse nature and outdoor sports excursions in winter and summer are available.

Pros

  • Close access to nature
  • Unique architecture
  • Amazing views

Cons

  • No Wi-Fi in rooms
  • Customer service is inconsistent
  • A long drive to get there

It's perched atop a cliff just outside town above Lago Villarrica, and its cozy rooms have fireplaces and huge windows overlooking the lake and the spectacularly landscaped grounds. Hotel Naguilán

$$$ | General Lagos 1927, Valdivia, 5090000, Chile

Located on the banks of the Río Valdivia, this is an entertaining and pretty spot, and the hotel itself is overall one of good quality. It's an especially good place to stay in summer owing to the outdoor pool near the river. Rooms in the property's newer building are bigger, with balconies and more modern furnishings; the older rooms, in a building that dates from 1890, are smaller and a bit dated with lime-green carpeting, but they have more character and are cheaper. Service-wise, you're in good hands here: as soon as you check in, a waiter appears to offer you a welcome pisco sour.
