The room to get (book ahead) is called El Capitan, which has huge windows that open up to an incredible lake view. The service is friendly and makes you feel right at home.

The hotel also offers a wide variety of services on-site, including indoor and outdoor pools, a Jacuzzi, restaurants, and a spa.

Near the highway, the hotel is convenient for travelers driving through the Lake District and has clean, spacious rooms. Services are solid, but unspectacular, including a restaurant, outdoor pool for the hot summer days, and gym. You can't go wrong with a night or two here.

European travelers favor this solid budget option up the hill from the bus station. The rooms are small but have comfy beds with lots of pillows. Look at a few before you pick one, as some have skylights rather than windows. The staff is exceptionally friendly and helpful. This is a good, cheap option for one night.

Close to the bus station, this is a decent, low-price option for a night or two in Puerto Montt. Rooms are no frills but clean and comfortable with attentive service. 

A towering hotel on a hill overlooking the lake, Cumbres Puerto Varas is part of a leading hotel chain in Chile that has gained a sterling reputation for their impeccable customer service. In addition, this hotel has extraordinary views, spacious rooms with all the amenities, a fine restaurant, and a friendly spa. Though the hotel is perhaps lacking in character, you can't go wrong with a stay here.

This chalet-style hotel looks like it comes straight from Germany; inside, the hotel has nondescript decor but it maximizes comfort with amenities not so common in southern Chilean hotels, including smart televisions, refrigerators, and air-conditioning. The rooms are of varied sizes, but most are generously proportioned suites that can sleep up to four people. Some of the rooms also have balconies with privileged views. The biggest advantage is being steps away from the main street of town.

A good choice based on the location alone, this hotel has a superb address on the riverfront, close to the city center. The rooms are big and clean, and many of them have great views of the rivers. Breakfasts are good and service is attentive. Part of a national chain of hotels, they cater primarily to business travelers, so the ambience and furnishings are plain.

This grand 1920s German-style house sits at Niebla's main intersection near the picturesque coastline and has been converted into a lovely bed-and-breakfast with lots of knickknacks, antiques, and cuckoo clocks in the common areas. Just a half hour drive from the center of Valdivia, the rooms have modern amenities but retain their old wood-finishing and overlook either the sea or the pool and back gardens.

Villarrica's oldest hotel is an unimposing house on a quiet street, but inside are elegant details such as wrought-iron fixtures and wood-burning fireplaces. Add the exceptionally attentive owners to the mix, and you have a real find.

This lovely old hotel is really two in one, with nuevo (new) and clásico (classic) wings facing each other across Avenida Bulnes in the city center. The rooms in the new wing are slightly better, but the rooms in the old wing are bigger. La Taberna, the restaurant on the ground floor, has excellent steak and seafood. Choose this hotel if you want to be in midtown.

A solid choice and well located, this older hotel is an easy walk to everything yet is on a quiet street. The staff provides excellent, responsive service. The rooms, although a bit small, are spotless, functional, and comfortable with all you need, including air-conditioning. Some rooms have a terrace with volcano views. Prices can drop considerably in low season.

Located on the banks of the Río Valdivia, this is an entertaining and pretty spot, and the hotel itself is overall one of good quality. It's an especially good place to stay in summer owing to the outdoor pool near the river. Rooms in the property's newer building are bigger, with balconies and more modern furnishings; the older rooms, in a building that dates from 1890, are smaller and a bit dated with lime-green carpeting, but they have more character and are cheaper. Service-wise, you're in good hands here: as soon as you check in, a waiter appears to offer you a welcome pisco sour.

This hotel has good quality rooms and cabins on its beautiful, 4-hectare (10-acre) private park, Metreñehue, which is covered with native forest and skirts along the Trancura River. Just 10 minutes outside of Pucón, it's a natural oasis and a laid-back spot, and an especially good choice for families with kids. There are rooms available in the small hotel, but the spacious riverside cabins are a great deal, complete with their own kitchens. The pool is especially welcome on hot summer days.

The exterior of this quiet, laid-back hotel resembles a mix of hotel and mountain lodge, which is apt because Puelche combines a large hotel's amenities and services with the more intimate feel and personalized attention seen in a mountain lodge. The rooms are big, many with stunning lake views. Downstairs, their restaurant doubles as an upscale hamburger joint.

In a near-perfect location, on a secluded spot on Isla Teja yet only eight blocks from downtown Valdivia, this highly regarded lodging has spacious, pleasant rooms decorated in soft lavender tones and views of the river. Service is exceptional. Play a few games of tennis or ride a mountain bike, then hit the pool or relax in the hot tub after a quick visit to town. Overall, this is a good value option.
