Huilo Huilo

$$$$ | Chile Fodor's Choice

This massive eco-tourism complex boasts five hotels, numerous cabins, and several camping sites amid the beautiful temperate forest, rivers, and lakes at the Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve. The three main lodges—Montana Magica Lodge, Nothafagus Lodge & Spa, and Reino Fungi Lodge—are connected by a long, wooden walkway. A fourth, Nawelpi Lodge, is a smaller, more exclusive lodge deeper inside the reserve on the northern side of the Puerto Fuy River. The fifth, Marina del Fuy Lodge, faces Lake Pirehueico and the Mocho Choshuenco volcano. Like nothing you have ever seen before, the surreal Nothafagus Lodge is shaped like a Baobab tree, while Reino Fungi Lodge resembles a giant mushroom. All of the hotels are heavily rustic, with walls made from native woods and the floors from handsome stones. The views from the rooms, looking out on forest with constant bird-singing traffic, are tremendous. Diverse nature and outdoor sports excursions in winter and summer are available.

Pros

  • Close access to nature
  • Unique architecture
  • Amazing views

Cons

  • No Wi-Fi in rooms
  • Customer service is inconsistent

Hotel Antumalal

$$$$ | Km 2, Camino Pucon-Villarrica, Pucón, 4920000, Chile

A young Queen Elizabeth stayed here in the 1950s, as did actor Jimmy Stewart—and the Antumalal hasn't changed much since then. The designs, styles, and colors from that decade have all been maintained at this historic hotel, which feels like a country inn. It's perched atop a cliff just outside town above Lago Villarrica, and its cozy rooms have fireplaces and huge windows overlooking the lake and the spectacularly landscaped grounds. If you tire of the Jacuzzi or relaxing with a refreshing pisco sour on the wisteria-shaded deck, just ask the hotel to arrange an outdoor adventure like fly-fishing, hiking, or sailing.

Termas Puyehue Wellness and Spa Resort

$$$$ | Ruta 215, Km 76, Puyehue, 5360000, Chile

This grandiose stone-and-wood hot springs resort sits on the edge of Parque Nacional Puyehue. It's an enormous hotel, with three restaurants, four bars, a movie theater, bowling alley, and a long slate of activities from darts to skiing to tennis, in addition to the thermal pools. The rooms and common areas here are a mix of starkly modern and 19th-century Germanic features like chrome, hardwoods, and even some modern art. While you may opt for a lower room rate with just breakfast included, the best bet may be the hotel's all-inclusive rate, which includes meals, drinks, excursions, and use of the pools and thermal baths in the price of the room (rates drop dramatically outside of summer months). The hotel also offers an all-day pass to use the springs and pools, with meals included, if you prefer not to stay overnight.
