The Chinatown Center

North Austin

This 180,000-square-foot open-air mall and cultural center is occupied by 35 Asian-owned businesses (mainly Chinese and Vietnamese), including restaurants, nail salons, bakeries, boba tea shops, and retail outlets selling clothing and jewelry. The cornerstone here is the MT (My Thanh) Supermarket, the largest international grocery store in Texas, which stocks all manner of Asian foods and related items. Dining standouts include First Chinese BBQ and Pho Saigon Noodle House. Though a bit short on atmosphere, eateries deliver well-prepared, simply presented lunch plates and noodle-based soups at easy-to-digest prices. The center is open daily, but some stores close one day a week.

Chinatown Kite Shop

Chinatown

This family-run shop has been selling bright, fun-shaped kites—dragons, butterflies, sharks—since the 1960s. There's a lot more than kites, too, with feng shui items, art tiles, and even iPhone cases that can go home as local souvenirs.

Ching Young Village

This popular family-run shopping center has its roots in the Chinese immigrants who came to Hawaii in the early 19th century. Hanalei's only full-service grocery store is here, along with other shops useful to locals and visitors, such as a music shop selling ukuleles and CDs, jewelry stores, art galleries, a surf shop, a variety store, and several restaurants.

Chino Farm

This is the place to buy the same premium (and very expensive) fruits, micro greens, edible flowers, and rare vegetables that the farm grows and harvests for many of San Diego's upscale restaurants, and for such famed California eateries as Chez Panisse in Berkeley and George's in La Jolla.

The Chocolate Fetish

Downtown

Chocolate truffles and sea-salt caramels are favorites here, but you can also buy made-on-site items such as chocolate in the shapes of cowboy boots and high heels. Most items are sold for takeout, but there's limited in-store seating if you just can't wait to scarf down these delicious sweets with a cup of rich hot chocolate.

The Chocolate House

Adams Morgan

For chocoholics with a gourmet palate, this is one-stop shopping. Offerings are both foreign (Michel Cluizel from France and Amedei from Italy) and domestic (Askinosie from Missouri and Amano from Utah). Selections from D.C.-area chocolatiers make for tasty souvenirs.

The Chocolate Moose

Dupont Circle

This store is simple, sheer fun for adults and kids alike. Looking for clacking, windup teeth? You can find them here, along with unusual greeting cards, whimsical and colorful socks, and unique housewares and handicrafts. ChoiceMART

This gem of a supermarket carries standard groceries and a surprisingly good selection of specialty items for such a small store. They also have excellent organic and Hispanic food aisles. Fresh poke is available by the pound at the butcher counter. This is probably the best place on the island for fresh fish, as the owner once fished with all his current suppliers and still maintains those connections. Grass-fed meats are plentiful too. Prices can be on the high side at times, balanced with good prices on other items.

Beautiful and unique things found here include owner Chris Lehrecke's handcrafted furniture and lighting and nature-inspired jewelry by iconic jeweler Ted Muehling and Mueling's former student (and Lehrecke's wife) Gabriella Kiss. You'll also find candlesticks and cabinet hardware from E.R. Butler and mirrored objects by Maureen Fullam. Lehrecke's work, which is inspired by George Nakashima and Charles and Ray Eames, is otherwise available only to the trade. The store is only open on weekends, or by appointment.

Christian Louboutin

Lipstick-red soles are the signature of Louboutin's delicately sexy couture stilettos, and his pointy-toe creations come trimmed with beads, buttons, spikes, or patent leather. There's a similar design on stylish lipstick cases with colors such as Diva and Very Prive. Some other styles of shoes are available, as well as purses and other accessories. The brand also has branched out to many products for men and children.

Christian Michi

Tony clothing and accessories by designers from Italy, such as Piazza Sempione, are represented here, as is the European line Hoss Intropia. Known for its evening wear, the shop has pricey but gorgeous gowns and a fine selection of cocktail dresses. High-end fragrances add to the luxurious air.

Family-owned and -operated for more than 45 years, this small cider-pressing factory sells honey, nuts, candy, apples, preserves, and, of course, fresh local cider. Don't ask how they make their pumpkin butter and homemade fudge—both are crafted from a secret recipe. If you're looking for quality wool, they have a great selection from the Pendleton line.

Circus Liquor

North Hollywood

This liquor store should be on your Valley itinerary as it's a quintessential L.A. photo op thanks to the 32-foot neon clown sign out front. His evil grin has been beckoning to passersby since the 1960s to stop in to peruse the boozy inventory that now boasts 750 different beers and 1,000 types of spirits. Thanks to his appearance in Clueless (it's where Alicia Silverstone gets held up) and a Snoop Dogg music video, the clown has become an icon. They even sell merch with his mug on it.
