When even Burning Man is overrun with influencers, it’s fair to wonder: Are there any festival experiences that haven’t been Coachellafied? The short answer? Yes. The long one? To get to a festival this underground, you’re going to have to want it.

Marfa, Texas is a cooler-than-thou, deep-desert town famous for eerie, floating ghost lights, Amazon series I Love Dick, and it’s almost mystical status as one of the best places on earth for creating new art and artists. Its 20 miles from the nearest town and 200 miles from the nearest airport, and the coolest creators come to it. This year, that lineup includes the artists, comedians and bands in the multidisciplinary festival Marfa Myths put on by Mexican Summer and Ballroom Marfa.

In fact, Deerhunter is part of the 2019 lineup, along with OG Ron C & the Chopstars, Cass McCombs, a psychedelic band from Burton, Texas that’s “a mix of 1960s Thailand funk, 1970s Persian rock, 1980s Algerian symphonia, disco, soul, and Balearic” named Khruangbin, and a host of other bin-in-the-back of the record store bangers.
If your brand is “right before it’s on everyone’s radar,” you probably already know how funny comedy duo John Early (Search Party) and Kate Berlant’s (Sorry to Bother You) late-night comedy set will be. Or have Insta’d Beatriz Cortez’ kinetic hypocycloid installations.
