White Dog Cafe

$$$ | University City

White Dog did farm-to-table long before the concept rose to national prominence, and the Sansom Street stalwart continues to remain fresh, lively, and unpretentious. The menu specializes in sustainable foods ethically sourced from the region—think simple cooking that highlights the beauty of Kennett Square mushrooms, Lancaster beef, or Chester County goat cheese. The convivial Parlor Bar has craft beers on tap and in bottles; the wine list is largely American. The space, a consolidation of historic brownstones, features distinct rooms decorated in farmer-chic style. There are a number of locations in the burbs as well, but this is the original.

The White Horse Tavern

$$$

The first tavern opened here in 1673—and ever since, the premises have served, in turn, as a tavern, boardinghouse, restaurant, and even a meetinghouse for Colonial Rhode Island's General Assembly. Today, the tavern provides an intimate fine-dining experience, the mood set by the low dark-beam ceilings, uneven plank floors, and four still-working fireplaces; an outside patio is a more recent addition.

White House Cafe

$
Set amid law offices on the north side of town, this dapper Craftsman-style home is an inviting spot for leisurely, if a touch decadent, brunches and lunches. Sit in the dining, living, or sun room—or, when the weather's nice, in the garden out back—and relish platters of egg, ham, and havarti croissant melts, prodigious sugar-dusted cinnamon rolls, and oven-roasted-chicken salad sandwiches, along with an array of daily-rotating desserts. There are also a couple of B&B guest rooms available on the second floor.

White House Sub Shop

$

The place claims to have made more than 23 million overstuffed sandwiches since 1946. Make sure you grab a sub (don’t call it a hoagie, hero, or grinder) to enjoy on your trip home; there's also a location at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. You’ll probably need an Italian sub or a White House Special (similar to the Italian sub but with more of everything) to help you recover from all the fun you’ve had. Celebrities seem to love it too; check out the walls of photos and memorabilia, where even a framed towel used by Frank Sinatra during his last Atlantic City performance doesn't seem all that odd.

White Lion Cafe

$$

Although the antiques shop within White Lion Cafe's cottage is now history, this comfort-food haven, with outdoor seating, remains embellished with reminders of the past. From a 1950s-era wooden wall phone to a metal icebox and a Coca-Cola machine, you'll also find a mounted jackalope watching over a wide list of specials (Homestead crab cakes, burgers, fried chicken, and meat loaf). They do a fish of the day and specialties like Romanian tenderloin (skirt steak cooked to order). Vegetarians go for grilled veggies over angel-hair pasta. Best of all, fare includes potatoes that are mashed, salt-crusted, and baked and then stuffed with sour cream and cheddar. Layer cakes, pies, and cobblers offer a sweet finish. Dine inside or at picnic tables under a covered patio, but don't count on separate checks.

This bustling bistro transforms from a coffee shop into a cocktail bar after hours. Stop in for a to-go cappuccino, or stay awhile amidst the calming greenery for smashed avocado toast topped with a farm egg.

White Mountain Cider Co.

Set in a historic cider mill near the Saco River, this rustic yet elegant bistro and adjacent gourmet market and deli presses fresh cider in the fall—it's served with traditional homemade cider doughnuts. But it's also a terrific farm-to-table restaurant, featuring a seasonal menu of eclectic, contemporary dishes. Consider the burrata with grilled stone fruit and a white balsamic–nasturtium reduction, and roasted Thai-style cod with lemongrass, pickled ginger, and a green curry sauce.

White Tiger Gourmet

Local foodies flock here for chef Ken Manring's delicious smoked meats and burgers at this hip but homey order-at-the-counter restaurant. Housed in an old storefront in the Boulevard Historic District just outside downtown, there aren't many indoor tables, but there's plenty of space to spread out in the picnic area outside. While meat is a specialty, the grilled tofu sandwiches and the Tiger Salad topped with tofu and fresh fruit have a fan following. Check out the daily specials, which can range from barbecue tacos to grilled fish.

White Yak

$$ | Roxborough

If you're new to TIbetan food, go for the momos, Tibetan dumplings that hold a hearty dollop of minced goodness within and come with a dipping broth. While there are good vegetarian options, the emphasis—as befits a high altitude cuisine—is generally on the meat dishes, whether curries, savory pastries, or the hearty beef-broth-based soups. Run by a Tibetan couple, and no longer a secret, this popular spot is up the hill from Manayunk in the Roxborough neighborhood. If you like heat, make sure to request it.

When Chef Christopher Stam and the Alchemy crew opened a burger joint in a strip mall, the Vineyard took notice. Happy to report that this simple spot (just a few tables and some plants, with a take-out counter) is a fun find in Edgartownand a nice respite from the eye-popping prices at the fancy spots. You wouldn't plan an anniversary dinner here, for sure, but the smash burgers are tasty and the veggie burgers pack some flavor. Sides include shakes, onion rings, and salty skinny fries.
