Windy Ridge Café

$$

Don't overlook Windy Ridge because of its industrial park neighborhood—the dining room is warm and inviting, and the baked goods are delicious. Lighter appetites might fancy the homemade chicken noodle soup and a Southwest salad, or if you've spent the day skiing or biking, tackle the meat loaf or a rack of smoked ribs. It's well worth the short trip from Main Street for this affordable menu. Just be sure to save room for a pastry or two from the neighboring Bakery at Windy Ridge.

Wine Bar

$$$

A sealed cigar room makes this one of the few restaurants in New York where you can still smoke. The lamb chops and the ahi tuna are two of the more popular items on the mostly American menu; small plates, with smaller prices, also are available. More than 40 wines are offered by the glass, but the bar pours other libations, too. Live musicians play on the weekends.

The Wine Bar on Palafox

$$

The Wine Bar on Palafox has become the place to see and be seen in Downtown Pensacola. Choose from dozens of wines by the glass or bottle, or visit during happy hour for many selections featured two-for-one.

16 Palafox Pl., Pensacola, FL, 32502, USA

Known For
  • Hip Downtown vibe
  • Extensive wine selection

The Wine Kitchen

$$
Loudoun County food and wine are celebrated at this cozy neighborhood eatery on downtown Leesburg’s main drag. The menu here changes as fresh ingredients are available—in fact, it’s not unlikely for diners to see farmers carting in produce straight from the fields----but expect twists on comfort food. The wine list includes a flight of local varietals. There are two other locations in Purcellville, VA and Frederick, MD.

Winebelly

$$ | South Austin

This South First Street spot sits alongside a gas station on an unattractive corner lot at Oltorf, but the trendy wine bar and Mediterranean-style tapas eatery boasts all the appeal of a cozy local hangout. Tapas are slightly larger (and pricier) than a traditional Spanish outpost, but the savory small plates deliver, from customary selections like cured anchovies and bravas fries (with pimento and chili peppers) to more unconventional, locally sourced dishes like short-rib bruschetta and pan-seared Gulf shrimp with smoked pork jowl and polenta.

Known For
  • International wine list and specialty cocktails

  • Sharing-friendly signatures

The Winery

$$$$

This is the place for that big night out and other special occasions in the area. The menu isn't terribly adventuresome, but the kitchen does turn out fresh-fish specials and top-notch steak, chicken, prime rib, and shrimp in simple, flavorful sauces. The decor is awash in stained glass, wood beams, exposed brick, and hanging plants, with dark nooks and crannies and ends of aging barrels as art, all of which combine for an intimate atmosphere. The real draw is for wine fans who want to try a more obscure bottle from the extensive, domestic-heavy roster.

Wink Restaurant & Wine Bar

$$ | West Austin

Tucked in a small strip mall off Lamar Boulevard, this sleek, petite restaurant is as dedicated to excellence in service and artful dishes as it is to fresh, quality ingredients from local purveyors. Put your trust in the classical trained chefs' five- and seven-course tasting menus (vegetarian options available), which change daily. Each course brings a surprising mix of flavors, from grilled antelope with sweet potatoes to seared dayboat scallops in a lemongrass-red-curry broth. The adjacent wine bar is a more casual way to experience the full menu or just small bites from the bar menu with selections from the formidable wine list.

Winnie's

$$ | Manayunk

Lively and upbeat, Winnie's has long been a solid choice for quality basics like a fried chicken sandwich, steak frites, and shrimp tacos. They also serves breakfast and baked goods.

Wintzell's Oyster House

$$

Although it's now a regional chain, this local favorite for seafood has been in business since 1938, serving a menu of mostly seafood (especially fresh and fried Gulf oysters) from its original location on Dauphin Street. A local favorite, the original location has a lot more home-spun charm than the newer branches, with bare wood tables and walls decorated with hand-printed signs and slogans. If you want to try one of the signatures, go for the fried crab claws or fried oyster dinner. The menu even includes a couple of steaks for those who don't eat seafood. For dessert, there's "loaded bread pudding" (for two).

605 Dauphin St., Mobile, AL, 36602, USA

The Wise Ox

$

Order any one of just seven menu items and then dig into mouth-stretching sandwiches on the small patio with communal picnic tables. The turkey with Swiss comes on perfectly toasted sourdough, while the Philly cheesesteak is heaping with shaved New York strip and pickled peppers; just about everything pairs well with their selection of beers on tap, and of course the beef-fat fries. As many customers who roll in for the food, there are just as many coming to grab cuts off the block from the butcher.

Wm. Mulherin’s Sons

$$$ | Fishtown

Wood-fired pizzas topped with creamy cheeses, striking meats, or in-season vegetables are the major draw at Wm. Mulherin's Sons, an elevated Italian restaurant—that sounds Irish—nestled in the midst of Fishtown. Located inside of a 20th-century distillery, the interior has been updated to welcome a modern Italian restaurant while still respecting the old-world charm by way of beautiful brickwork and heavy wood accents. The restaurant offers brunch on weekends and dinner nightly with menu standouts like delicate pastas and grilled meats, in addition to the wood-fired pizza.

Gooey desserts and craft cocktails complete the cosmopolitan scene.

Wolfgang's Restaurant and Wine Bistro

$$$

Cheerful and unpretentious, though not inexpensive, Wolfgang's has an eclectic menu ranging from a Wiener schnitzel to venison au poivre to Cajun shrimp and grits (the founder was a chef in New Orleans). Several of the rooms—spread across two former homes with a breezeway between—have fireplaces, and in good weather, there's outdoor seating. The wine list is smart and long.

Wolfgang's Steakhouse by Wolfgang Zwiener

$$$$ | Waikiki

The Honolulu outpost of the New York–based original serves good steaks that have been dry-aged on-site, as well as classic shrimp cocktails, slabs of Canadian bacon, crab cakes, creamed spinach, broiled jumbo lobster, and the token grilled fish selection. If it sounds like Peter Luger's on the Pacific, then it won't come as a surprise to learn that owner Wolfgang Zwiener was once head waiter at that legendary Brooklyn steak house. Stop by during happy hour for a prix fixe sampler deal, or wander in for lunch and then spend the rest of the day lounging on the beach.

Woody's Crab House

$$

You can buy crabs here, of course, and have them served any number of imaginative ways. But slurp one of the thick homemade soups, or down the famous Carolina shrimp burger, to understand why this funky little eatery is so popular. The children's menu is a thoughtful extra. But go easy on the real food: Woody's ice-cream parlor, next door, includes seasonal favorite flavors such as apple, pumpkin, and Fourth of July (a celebration of red, white, and blue ice creams). Call ahead if you want traditional crabs. Woody's is quite hopping, so they occasionally run out.

The turkey sandwich comes with tomato-basil soup, and the BBQ Brisket Melt has a deliciously tangy sauce, but the grilled three-cheese sandwich is so popular that Disney has actually shared the recipe on its website.
