Work & Class

$$ | RiNo

Well executed in a shipping container in the trendy RiNo Art District, this restaurant seats guests at a communal table or at one of the two bars, where you can watch the line cooks shred pork for the tender cochinita pibil (a savory slow-roasted Yucatán favorite) or cut off haunches of citrus-zesty short ribs—meat comes priced by weight, from a quarter to a full pound. In keeping with the name, the rest of the menu is indeed "regular folks' food," but turned up a notch: think shrimp and grits or cheesy tomato mac spiked with chipotles. Happy hour is a big deal from 5 to 6 Wednesday through Sunday, with $6--$8 snacks and $5 beers. There are no reservations or groups over seven, but if you do have to wait, the drinks are only $5.

World Pie

$$

Reasonably-priced mouthwatering Italian food make this down-to-earth eatery a popular choice. Sure, you can get a pepperoni pie here, but you can also try the Magnum with roast pork, bacon, and pineapple or the Mr. Tang with Asian-style duck, cilantro, mozzarella, and goat cheese. Forget ordinary salads; here they have fire-roasted portobello mushroom salad and crispy artichokes with green goddess dressing. In addition to Italian favorites, entrees include tandoori grilled chicken with curried couscous. Sunday brunch is popular here, and they host lots of fun, special events all year long. Enjoy your pie at outdoor tables in summer. The service here is friendly and especially welcoming, but is not consistently attentive when it get busy.

Wrangler's Steakhouse & The Saddle Room

$$$

The reins have been handed over to the next generation at this family-run restaurant, where meats are grilled over kiawe wood for a smokey flavor. Steaks and burgers are made from from Rancher's Daughter's Reserve grass-fed Kauai beef, lettuce is grown nearby at Iwikua Farms, and there's usually a locally caught fish special. Denim-covered seating, decorative saddles, and a stagecoach in a loft transformed the old Ako General Store in Waimea into a comfortable Western-look steak house where you can eat on the front porch, on a deck out back, or in the old-fashioned wood-panel dining room. Live music is lined up nightly, and The Saddle Room saloon stays busy until 10 pm, thanks to a dozen appetizers, a decent selection of beers, and "fancy kine" cocktails. Time things right and you can enjoy a bite before a movie at the Waimea Theater across the street.

Wrap Shack

$

Westfork Meadows has several tasty eat-in or take-out spots. At Wrap Shack wraps start out the size of a pizza, and stuffed, aren't a whole lot smaller. Choose as many fillings as you can handle, but if you want dinner, you'll have to eat early because the shop closes at 7.

$

All-you-can-eat roast chicken, bread, salad, pasta with red sauce, and fries is a northern Rhode Island tradition that grew out of the need to feed many people efficiently. With 75 ovens, six dining rooms, and four bars, the mammoth banquet facility dishes up nearly 1 million pounds of chicken a year. Fans of kitschy local lore will enjoy a visit to this certifiable tourist attraction, where the gift shop sells chicken-themed doodads, toys, collectables, and candy by the pound.

Xi'an Noodles

$

Diners here sometimes find their meal interrupted by the soft thumping noise for which the chewy, ropy noodles the restaurant specializes in are named. Biang biang noodles are made by slapping strands of dough against the hard counter, which elongates them without toughening the dough. The wide strands come in a number of dishes, along with other preparations from the eponymous city. Like most restaurants serving the food of China’s Shaanxi province, Xi’an uses a heavy hand with spices such as cumin, Sichuan peppercorn, and, in some dishes, hot peppers. But the flatbreads, salads, and soups at this sparsely decorated, casual spot all come in a variety of flavors, many mild.

5259 University Way NE, Seattle, 98105, USA

  • Fresh hand-pulled noodles
  • Zingy salads
  • Delightfully spicy food

Xi'an Sizzling Woks

$ | Chinatown

This small restaurant serves freshly made versions of food from Xi'an (a city in central China), including thick and chewy hand-cut noodles, the slippery and refreshing Liang pi (cold noodles served with chili oil), and rougamo (a burger-like dish of leavened bread stuffed with your choice of meat). If it's your first time, the menu's photos are instructive, while those with knowledge of Xi'an's culinary traditions will be impressed by these well-made versions.

Xoco

$ | River North

By opening a third restaurant next door to perennial favorites Frontera Grill and Topolobampo, celeb chef Rick Bayless has taken control of this River North block. With Xoco, he's given the city the ultimate place for tortas (Mexican sandwiches) served at breakfast, lunch, and dinner; caldos, generous bowls of pozole, and other Latin-inspired soups; and hot chocolate made from cacao beans that are roasted and ground on the premises. There's also a killer Saturday brunch menu and a happy hour with cheap drinks and bar snacks.

Yachtsman Steakhouse

$$$$ | EPCOT Resort Area

The chefs at this New England–themed steak house are proud of their high-quality, aged beef, which is hand-cut on-site and can be seen mellowing in a glass-enclosed butcher shop near the entryway. Although not easy on the wallet, dishes such as the 12-ounce New York strip with peppercorn-brandy sauce and truffle mac and cheese are quite tasty. Other options include rib-eye, prime rib, and filet mignon, as well as seafood dishes like lobster bisque or king salmon. Nice selections of dessert wines and scotches round out the menu.

Yak & Yeti

$$$ | Animal Kingdom

This two-story, 250-seat restaurant offers everything from noodles, curries, and wok dishes to Korean barbecue, with standout entrées that include seared miso salmon or roasted duck with plum barbecue sauce (an occasional prix-fixe menu is offered as well). The decor is pleasantly faux-Asian, with cracked plaster walls, wood carvings, and tile mosaic tabletops, and the adjacent bar is a surprisingly intimate place to escape from the crowds and grab a drink while the kids are getting wet at Kali River Rapids.

$ | Spenard

Savor the flavors of India, Nepal, and Tibet in this quick, cozy restaurant owned by Lobsang Dorjee, a Tibetan who grew up in India, and his wife, lifelong Alaskan Suzanne Hull. $

Conveniently located in the heart of the Olive Way bar scene, this walk-up window caters to the drinking crowd with its late-night hours but serves its Middle Eastern sandwiches all day. There's a helluva lot of southern lovin' from the low country at this funky South Beach spot, where Miami's A-list puts calorie-counting aside to indulge in comfort foods and innovative drinks. The family-style menu is divided between small plates, "the bird" plates, and sides and snacks, but have no doubt that "the bird" takes center stage (or plate) here—you'll rave about Llewellyn's fine fried chicken, which requires a 27-hour marination and slow-cooking process, for weeks to come.

Yardbird Southern Table & Bar

$$$ | North Strip

While the specialty here is fried chicken, if you are going here expecting a down-and-diner experience, you'll be disappointed; this is Southern, high-cotton style, though with a healthy sense of humor. The atmosphere is country-esque—rustic wood and brick with chicken-wire windows. At lunch you'll find choices such as the \"YB Nashville Hot Sandwich,\" with Carolina reaper rub and spicy slaw, while the dinner menu tempts with \"Baker's Bacon Bouquet\" (chicken with spiced watermelon and a sharp cheddar waffle), or a bourbon-glazed short rib. Finish with a fried Oreo sundae or Key lime pie. At brunch from 9 am to 4 pm on weekends, try braised short rib huevos rancheros, or a fried green tomato BLT stack.
