Liberty Hotel Boston, Beacon Hill and Boston Common
Liberty Hotel Boston

Few places in town can rival the Liberty Hotel's soaring lobby, ringed by several layers of revamped metal catwalks and populated by couches, tables, and armchairs where you can sit with a cocktail or a coffee and commiserate. Little Palm Island Resort & Spa

$$$$ | 28500 Overseas Hwy., FL, 33042, USA Fodor's Choice
Little Palm Island Resort & Spa, Little Torch Key
Little Palm Island Resort & Spa

Haute tropicale best describes this wildly luxurious private-island retreat, and "second mortgage" might explain how some can afford the extravagant prices, but for those who can, it's worth the price. This property sits on a private 5½-acre palm-fringed island inhabited by Key deer, 3 miles offshore from Little Torch Key. The 15 oceanfront thatch-roofed bungalows house 30 suites with copper soaking tubs, mosquito-netting-draped king-size beds, and British colonial–style furnishings. Other comforts include an indoor and outdoor shower, private veranda, separate living room, and comfy robes and slippers. Two Island Grand Suites are twice the size of the others and offer his-and-hers bathrooms, an outdoor copper tub, and uncompromising ocean views. To preserve the quiet atmosphere, there are no TVs in the bungalows, and cell phones are highly discouraged in public areas.

Pros

  • Secluded setting
  • Heavenly spa
  • Easy wildlife viewing

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Might be too quiet for some
  • Accessible only by boat or seaplane

Los Poblanos Historic Inn & Organic Farm

$$$ | 4803 Rio Grande Blvd. NW, Albuquerque, NM, 87107, USA Fodor's Choice
Los Poblanos Inn, Albuquerque
Main Driveway and Silos

Designed in the 1930s by the renowned Pueblo Revival architect John Gaw Meem, Los Poblanos stands today as a quintessential element of Albuquerque's North Valley and its pastoral soul. Newer "Field" rooms are so well conceived, they complement both the grounds' lush lavender fields and the earlier aesthetic perfectly. All rooms here provide an authentic New Mexico moment: Moroccan-patterned tiles, hand-worked tin sconces, and kiva fireplaces, some set in the soft curves of adobe walls. Enjoy the panoramic view of the Sandia Mountains—and the show-off peacocks that wander the grounds—from the Campo dining room, where you may dine through the day. Consider heading to the heavenly-scented Hacienda Spa for a restorative treatment or the Wellness Yurt for a complimentary yoga session. You might then choose to venture no farther than the saltwater lap pool or the Farm Shop, partake in afternoon tea or a drink at the guests-only Library Bar, or perhaps pedal the meandering acequia trails as far as one of the Inn's bicycles (e-bike or cruiser) carry you.

Pros

  • Visitor well-being is paramount
  • Lovely gardens and landscape stonework
  • Guests-only Library Bar and afternoon tea at La Quinta

Cons

  • Peacocks may startle (and consequently screech)

Butlers have been catering to the whims of each and every guest since the St. Regis first opened its doors in 1904, a touch no other New York hotel can match. Rooms have high ceilings, crystal chandeliers, vivid fabrics, and crown moldings—along with easy-to-use bedside consoles for controlling lighting, audio, climate, and huge flat-screen TVs that rise from the foot of your bed. Even at these prices, though, you're not guaranteed a stellar view or a separate tub in the more basic rooms. Still, if you require the best, the St. Regis delivers. The \"designer suites\" are outfitted in one-of-a-kind style by Dior and Bentley and have fabulous views. Dine in the legendary King Cole Bar, a dimly lit institution with the famously playful Maxfield Parrish mural, and keep your eye out for historic touches throughout the property, like an original mail chute in the lobby.

Pros

  • Superb in-house dining
  • Rooms combine true luxury with helpful technology
  • Easy-access butler service

Cons

  • High price doesn't guarantee a great view
  • Too serious for families seeking fun
  • Standard rooms don't have soaking tubs

The Standard, High Line

$$ | 848 Washington St., New York, NY, 10014, USA Fodor's Choice
The Standard, Meatpacking District
Courtesy The Standard

This modern architectural statement is perpetually one of New York's hottest hotels, with the High Line running underneath it, a lobby full of glamorous types, an authentic beer garden (open year-round; dig the table tennis), and an 18th-floor nightclub that is one of the toughest doors in town. Rooms, with low platform beds, are on the small side (even by New York standards) but floor-to-ceiling windows add a sense of space. Some rooms have showers separated from the bedroom by little more than a glass partition. As you'd expect in a space (and neighborhood) that's so sceney, it can get loud at night. The Standard Grill restaurant, which is almost always packed, handles room service.

Pros

  • Nice building with sweeping views
  • Beautiful people
  • Impressive restaurant space

Cons

  • Noisy at night
  • Tight rooms
  • Can be too trendy

The Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island are within view at Terranea, L.A.'s only full-service oceanfront resort straddling 102 terraced acres at land's end on the scenic Palos Verdes Peninsula. Its location gives it the feel of a retreat. A fun pool slide, children's center, and kids' programs allow the youngsters to play, while giving parents time to relax. Topping Rose House

$$$$ | 1 Bridgehampton-Sag Harbor Tpke., Bridgehampton, NY, 11932, USA Fodor's Choice
Topping Rose House, Bridgehampton
Michael Weber

"Top Chef" judge and renowned chef Tom Colicchio oversees both the restaurant and rooms at this posh, culinary-focused Bridgehampton inn, centered around a Greek Revival-style mansion built in the 1840s for Judge Abraham Topping Rose. The property later passed into the hands of other prominent families before housing a series of inns and restaurants. In 2010 it was purchased by two big-time former CEOs who spent about two years renovating and expanding the place to its current incarnation. In addition to snagging Colicchio as the overall operator, the inn has assembled an industry dream team to serve as general manager, chef de cuisine, food & beverage director and pastry chef—a lot of firepower for a place with just 14 accommodations. Rooms are spread over three locations: the original mansion houses king and twin rooms and two one-bedroom suites; the modern, loft-like Studio has three large king rooms; and four three-bedroom Cottages—each with private outdoor space—are located between the inn's orchard and farm. (Cottages can be booked as one unit or divided into three separate rooms.) All options have Frette linens, Naturopathica bath products, flatscreen TVs, and customizable mini-bars. Amenities include a swimming pool, complimentary bikes and a beach shuttle, yoga and Pilates classes, and a Naturopathica spa. The real draw, of course, is the restaurant, with its wraparound porch, two-fireplace bar, and upscale American menu highlighting local wines, seafood, meats, and produce from the Topping Rose Farm.

Pros

  • A foodie's dream
  • Luxury paired with contemporary style
  • Expert service, including concierge
  • On-site spa
  • Orchard and farm
  • Peaceful getaway

Cons

  • Hamptons-style price tag
