Mount View Hotel & Spa

$$ | 1457 Lincoln Ave., Calistoga, CA, 94515, USA

Although it occupies a 1919 building designated a National Historic Landmark, the Mount View skews modern, with a cheery lobby and a boutique, slightly continental feel. Three cottages have private redwood decks and whirlpool tubs; these and the second-floor suites and junior suites, which have separate sitting areas, are more spacious than the other guest rooms. All the accommodations have flat-screen TVs, small refrigerators, safes, and Illy espresso makers. Complimentary coffee and breads are delivered to rooms each morning. The full-service True Spa and Johnny's comfort-food restaurant and sports bar operate on the first floor, and there’s a heated pool with a geothermal hot tub out back. Adjacent to the hotel in an open-air space, Robert’s Tropical Table serves Jamaican-inspired cuisine year-round, and the Moonshine outdoor theater screens classic and neoclassic Hollywood films on summer and fall weekends. Mountain Lake

$$ | 115 Hotel Circle, Pembroke, VA, 24136, USA

The 1987 movie "Dirty Dancing" was filmed here, and the resort (Kellerman's in the movie) is still a popular summer getaway. Centered on the highest natural lake east of the Mississippi, accommodations range from spartan cottages to plush suites in a majestic sandstone hotel from 1930 (the resort itself predates the Civil War). You can also rent two-, three-, and four-bedroom cottages if you need more space for an extended stay. Atop the 4,000-foot Salt Pond Mountain, outdoor activities abound: you can hike, mountain bike, ride horses, swim, and boat within the 2,500-acre Mountain Lake Wilderness, which surrounds the hotel. The adjacent Jefferson National Forest offers even more recreation, including a segment of the Appalachian Trail. Mourelatos Lakeshore Resort

$$ | 6834 N. Lake Blvd., Tahoe Vista, CA, 96148, USA

At first glance, this family-run waterfront property looks like a slightly above-average two-story motel, but it legitimately lays claim to the title of resort thanks to a private beach; two hot tubs; alluring lake and mountain vistas; and summertime barbecuing, kayaking, and other extras. About half the rooms have king beds, queen sofabeds, and full kitchens, a boon for families or other groups. The remaining kings and all the queens have wet bars. All rooms have patios or balconies, and though the buildings are perpendicular to the lake, the windows are angled to maximize the views. Book well ahead for summer stays; look for online bargains for the rest of the year.

Pros

  • Multinight discounts
  • Some rooms have full kitchens
  • Additional cabins and cottages across the highway

Movie Colony Hotel

$$ | 726 N. Indian Canyon Dr., Palm Springs, CA, 92262, USA

Designed in 1935 by Albert Frey, this intimate, adults-only hotel leans hard into the mid-century minimalist aesthetic throughout its gleaming-white, balcony-studded, two-story buildings and its residential-style rooms, where the accents and bright colors are era-accurate. Although some of the furniture feels like its part of an IKEA golden age collection, the property has recently added such mod cons as Wi-Fi, Keurig coffeemakers, flat-screens, and pillowtop king beds. A cool vibe prevails—in the morning over coffee and continental breakfast, in late afternoon by the pool, and in the evening by the courtyard fire feature.

Pros

  • Architectural icon
  • Cool vibe
  • Property-wide remodel in 2019

Cons

  • Close quarters, small pool area

All guest rooms are intentionally small and feature one queen-size bed and furniture that can be folded and moved—the trade-off is inexpensive rates for a central location. Nantucket Whale Inn

$$ | 779 Main St., Half Moon Bay, CA, 94019, USA

While most upscale hotels on the Peninsular coastline are indeed on the actual coast, this delightful bed-and-breakfast resides right in the heart of Half Moon Bay's pleasant downtown. In many ways, that location brings together the best of both worlds—a short jaunt to the beach in the daytime and then walking distance to restaurants in the evening. The small B&Bs design theme is inspired by the island of Nantucket on the opposite coast, and rooms are split between the main house and a garden cottage.

Pros

  • Spacious rooms with lots of charm
  • Unique zinc bed frames in most rooms
  • Evening wine hour

Cons

  • Smallest room's bathroom is private but accessed from hallway
  • Some rooms only have a queen bed
  • Thin walls

Napa Valley Railway Inn

$$ | 6523 Washington St., Yountville, CA, 94599, USA

Travelers, especially ones with kids, appreciate these cozy accommodations—most inside actual railcars—only steps from many of Yountville's best restaurants. The inn isn't fancy, but it's clean and well maintained, and except in high season, when rates trend up, you'll save money to spend on shopping, dining, and wine tasting. More than 100 years old, the railcars house seven long narrow rooms (an eighth room is not in a car) with a bit more style than your average motel. All have small flat-panel TVs, refrigerators, coffeemakers, and indoor and outdoor sitting areas. Double-paned windows filter out most outside noise except the sound of suitcase wheelies on the deck separating the cars. Some guests prefer the southern rooms on the east (Washington Street) side; they're the farthest away from Highway 29, about 100 yards to the west, and the Mini Model Bakery, which is on the inn's north side.

Pros

  • Prime location
  • Quaint appeal
  • Reasonable rates most of the year

Cons

  • Office is sometimes unstaffed
  • Sells out quickly in high season
  • Lacks pool, fitness center, and other amenities
