Omni Austin Hotel Downtown

$$ | 700 San Jacinto St., Austin, TX, 78701, USA

Your introduction to this bustling, business-oriented hotel is a soaring, granite-and-glass atrium lobby. From atrium-view rooms you can spy on diners and scurrying businesspeople below. Exterior rooms have balconies and city vistas (on upper floors). The decor, simple but modern, neither inspires nor offends. The rooftop pool offers beautiful downtown views but fills up fast on weekends. The central downtown location can mean loud Sixth Street overflow for lower-level rooms. At breakfast, the eggs are cage-free and the bagels are shipped in from New York. Service is professional, if on the cool side.

Pros

  • Heated rooftop pool
  • Central location
  • Everything for the business traveler

Cons

  • Can feel impersonal
  • Loud street noise on weekends
  • Not an ideal romantic escape

Omni San Francisco Hotel

$$ | 500 California St., San Francisco, CA, 94104, USA

In a 1926 Florentine Renaissance–style structure that once housed banks and other financial enterprises, this upscale chain draws travelers seeking historical flavor and a prime downtown location right on the California Street cable car line. The lobby's glittering crystal chandeliers, dark mahogany paneling, and iron-and-marble staircase recall a bygone era of gentility. Meanwhile, the ample, immaculate guest rooms, with their high ceilings, crown molding, San Francisco–theme imagery, carved-mahogany furniture, and bathrooms with marble vanities, reinforce the period feel while being contemporary with the usual tech amenities.

Pros

  • Rooms that truly don't feel cookie-cutter
  • Great on-site bar
  • "get fit" kits for working out in-room, plus well-equipped fitness center

Cons

  • Creaky floors and other noise can be an issue
  • Some guests might find the older rooms' design in need of a refresh

One Ocean Resort & Spa

$$ | 1 Ocean Blvd., Atlantic Beach, FL, 32233, USA

Atlantic Beach's only high-rise oceanfront hotel captures the serenity of the sea through a color palette of translucent green, sand, and sky blue and reflective materials such as glass and marble. A sophisticated yet relaxed "art gallery" theme is carried through to the original photographs that hang in every room. Some guests balk at the $30-a-day resort fee that's tacked on to the room rate, but considering all it includes (Wi-Fi, mini-refrigerator, two bicycles for two hours daily, beach chairs and umbrellas daily), it's not such bad deal.

Pros

  • Walking distance to restaurants, shops, and the beach
  • All rooms have an ocean view
  • Room service

Cons

  • Tiny bathrooms
  • No self-parking on property
  • Steep resort fee and separate valet-parking fee

Orchard Hotel

$$ | 665 Bush St., San Francisco, CA, 94108, USA

Unlike many of the area's other boutique hotels, which occupy century-old buildings, the Orchard was built in 2000—though the marble lobby, with dramatic architectural embellishments like arched openings, vaulted ceilings, and stone floors, evokes another era. Painted Lady Bed & Brew

$$ | 1100 Bellamah Ave. NW, Albuquerque, NM, 87104, USA

On a quiet side street on the fringe of Albuquerque’s Sawmill-Wells Park districts, a particular personality is revealed in this low-slung historic adobe: while it decidedly favors fans of the ever-growing craft brew scene, it also offers comfortably appointed suites that have been thoughtfully modernized from their original early 1900s construction. A balanced mix of restoration (the haint blue paint and wooden bead-board ceilings are true to their era) and upgrade (kitchens and bathrooms—aside from the recreation of period penny-tile flooring—are pure 21st century) is complemented by vintage prints and photographs and modern furnishings, with some pieces more successful than others. Inspired by its one-time life as a saloon and dance hall with a “wine room in connection” (or, in period code, brothel), Painted Lady owes its name to the building’s checkered history. Today, the closest connection to the past is the brew aspect of the operation: a daily 55-minute “hoppy hour” brings guests a local beer of choice, to be enjoyed in the pleasant garden’s nooklike seating areas or in the refurbished mid-20th-century trolley that sits near the entrance.

Pros

  • Garden seating enhanced with murals and locally hand-forged metalwork
  • Cool history
  • Two afternoon beers free

Cons

  • Creative furnishings vary in appeal
  • Two-night stay may be required
  • Beer beats breakfast (no meal offered)

The vibrant rooftop lounge features gorgeous views of the Gaslamp District, San Diego Bay, and the Coronado Bridge, and offers full bar service and light bites when open between March and November. The all-day eatery, Saint James French Diner, combines the feel of a classic American diner with the subtlety of a French bistro and offers room service for dinner only. Due to the age of the building, some of the rooms feel a bit small with some odd layouts (like a vanity in the sitting area), but each one is beautifully designed with Bellino linens on comfortable beds. Wi-Fi is free, as is the Nespresso machine in each room, and dogs and service animals are welcome for $100 for the entire stay. Nevertheless, the fee can be waived with proof of documentation for service animals. Leave the kids at home—this hotel is meant more for business travelers and design-savvy visitors.

Part of the ever-growing Palisociety lifestyle-hotel brand, Palihouse West Hollywood is the latest addition and a much-needed hotel in the lodging-bare stretch of West 3rd Street. The design aesthetic is contemporary cottage where each part of the hotel feels like a country home brought into the center of the city. Rooms are modest in size and all feature kitchenettes with microwaves and Smeg iceboxes. Off the lobby is a lovely all-day dining café and plant-filled patio. Order from an array of California cuisine for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Up on the second floor, the heated pool is used as a relaxing escape from the traffic outside. They offer complimentary lemonade and candy bars in the pool lounge. The hotel's location might be its biggest asset as it sits in next to Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, and Mid-Wilshire, making it very easy to jet around town to major sites and attractions.
