Logan Inn

$$ | 10 W. Ferry St., New Hope, PA, 18938, USA

Established in 1727, the Logan once accommodated passengers riding the ferry to Lambertville, and today the thoroughly modern inn has updated older rooms and a wing of rooms added in 2021, as well as expanded dining and drinking areas that appeal to today's upscale visitors. George Washington is said to have stayed here at least five times—it's hard to imagine what he would think of the people eating on the expansive patio and the shoppers who stroll past this inn smack-dab in the busiest part of town. The 22 newer rooms in the annex use pops of color and a mix of retro and modern accent pieces; the 16 rooms in the historic building are less expensive, generally a bit smaller, and more traditionally decorated. Some rooms have river views. Besides the Landmark Tavern, a large modern American restaurant with windows overlooking Main Street, the inn has a bar (Good + Plenty) and the plush, speakeasy-like Whiskey Lounge. Also part of the Logan Inn campus is the next-door Mansion Inn, in a renovated Victorian building, with eight rooms open only on weekends (at this writing) and Anzu Social (an Asian restaurant); a spa is scheduled to open in mid-2026.

Pros

  • In the heart of New Hope
  • New rooms are modern and stylish (and more expensive)
  • Alfresco patio dining is good for people-watching

Cons

  • No telephone in rooms
  • Interior modernization comes with some loss of historic charm
  • Restaurant can get quite noisy

Magdalena Hotel

$$ | 1101 Music Lane, Austin, TX, 78704, USA

This 89-room boutique hotel, strategically tucked away on Music Lane, feels a world away from the immediately adjacent South Congress Avenue, thanks to its brilliant architectural and landscape design that highlights intuitive privacy and proximity to nature. Four buildings, interconnected by elevated walkways and courtyards surrounding a lovely outdoor pool and lounge, compose this treehouse-esque complex that boasts views (from certain rooms), plush beds and amenities, and access to the excellent on-site Summer House restaurant.

Pros

  • Wonderful SoCo location
  • Heated outdoor pool and lounge area
  • Hip interiors, on-site restaurant, and sleek front desk gift shop

Cons

  • Some standard rooms are small with no views
  • The best rooms and suites are quite pricey
  • No fitness center
