W Miami

$$$$ | 485 Brickell Ave., FL, 33131, USA

Formerly the Viceroy, Miami's second W hotel cultivates a brash, supersophisticated Miami attitude, likely stemming from its whimsically decorated guest rooms, floor-to-ceiling marble bathrooms, and the Philippe Starck–designed 28,000-square-foot Iconbrickell Spa. Rooms are available in a host of categories, ranging from 440-square-foot "Wonderful" rooms to a 1,550-square-foot "Wow" suite that has a living room, dining room, and sweeping views of Biscayne Bay. Each room, though, is furnished with a private balcony, a W Signature bed with down comforter and pillows, a safe, Wi-Fi, and a TV. The 50th floor Wet Deck is the W's rooftop pool, offering expansive views of Biscayne Bay and Miami's skyline. Relax in a chaise under an umbrella or sip cocktails in the sun.

Pros

  • Smart design elements
  • Exceptional spa
  • Great gym

Cons

  • Serious traffic getting in and out of hotel entrance
  • The amazing 15th floor pool is for residents, not hotel guests
  • Many rooms allow only two persons maximum

W San Francisco

$$$ | 181 3rd St., San Francisco, CA, 94103, USA

Chic, urbane, and nicely laid out, the W's colorful guest rooms (and unique Spectacular Studio indoor-outdoor suites with a heated patio) come with an abstract Gold Rush theme (both the 1800s one and the current tech wave) and include such comforts as upholstered window seats, pillow-top mattresses, Nespresso machines, and sleek baths with MOMO amenities by Davines. Upper floors have excellent views of SFMOMA, Yerba Buena Gardens, and the Bay Bridge. Business guests dominate during the week, but on weekends the hotel attracts families with children and pets are always very welcome. This is the first LEED-EB (for large brand hotels in existing buildings) Platinum-certified building in North America. As far as W Hotels go, this one feels a little more grown-up.

Pros

  • Nicely designed fitness center
  • Guest rooms feel refreshingly not like a chain
  • Exciting cocktails at the Living Room bar

Cons

  • The intense tech theme might seem excessive for leisure travelers
  • Feels like a convention center at peak times

A taste of youthful but sophisticated elegance, this hot-spot hotel in the heart of Scottsdale's shopping and social scene caters to the wants and needs of the fashionable but fickle traveler with "Whatever/Whenever" service that provides guests with anything they want ("as long as it's legal!"). Waco Hilton

$$$ | 113 S. University Parks Dr., Austin, TX, 76701, USA

Waco's premier full-service hotel, the Hilton underwent a $19 million renovation that was to be completed in May 2008. The only things that remain the same are the hotel's doors (from guest-room doors to closet doors). Everything else has been redone—even the main entrance has shifted, from University Parks Drive to Third Street and Franklin Avenue, allowing more space for drop-offs. It's a favorite of business travelers (it's connected to the Waco Convention Center) and guests connected with nearby Baylor University. Some of the spacious, luxurious rooms overlook Indian Spring Park and the historic Suspension Bridge just across the street.

Pros

  • Several restaurants, shops, and attractions within walking distance
  • Rooms are quiet

Cons

  • Probably the most expensive property in town
  • Some weekends (Baylor homecoming and graduation, for example) are booked months in advance

Walt Disney World Dolphin

$$$$ | 1500 EPCOT Resorts Blvd., Walt Disney World, FL, 32830, USA

A pair of 56-foot-tall sea creatures bookends a 25-story, glass, A-frame structure at this luxe resort designed, like the adjoining Swan (which is also on Disney property but not a Disney-owned resort), by world-renowned architect Michael Graves and set close enough to the parks that you can escape the midday heat for a dip in the pool. Guests get some (like transportation and Extra Magic Hours) but not all (in-park charging privileges) of the perks of staying on Disney property. The Swan Reserve, an annex opened in late 2021, has additional rooms and suites and its own pool, ballroom, and four unique restaurants; it's designed to keep some of the hustle and bustle of conferences and conventions away from the main hotels.

Pros

  • Character meals and free (boat or bus) transport to BoardWalk and Disney parks
  • Access to all facilities at the Swan
  • Swan Reserve annex with rooms and amenities geared to convention guests

Cons

  • Expensive daily self-parking fee
  • Expensive daily resort fee
  • No charging to room at the parks

Walt Disney World Swan

$$$ | 1200 EPCOT Resorts Blvd., Lake Buena Vista, FL, 32830, USA

This luxurious hotel, like its sister hotel the Dolphin, is not owned by Disney but still receives many of the same Disney perks, including Extra Magic Hours but excluding the ability to charge park purchases to your room. Often used for conventions, both the Swan and Dolphin have a more grown-up feel than most of the hotels on Disney property and are good for those looking to get away from the Disney sensory overload.

Pros

  • Boat service to EPCOT and Hollywood Studios
  • Adult-oriented
  • Refurbished in 2019

Cons

  • No charging to room key at the parks
  • Expensive daily resort fee
  • Expensive self-parking fee

The Wanderer Cottages

$$ | 195 Sea Rd., Kennebunk, ME, 04043, USA

This cluster of tidy, well-appointed cottages opened in 2022 in a quiet area that's still a stone's throw from beaches and Dock Square. The cottages might look tiny from the outside, but soaring ceilings and whitewashed walls make them feel spacious. The “little cottages” are for two adults only; children 12 and older can stay in the “big cottages.” Some cottages are dog-friendly.

Pros

  • Heated saltwater pool
  • Serene, nicely landscaped setting with a firepit and a bocce court
  • Private, spacious-feeling cottages, some with sitting areas

Cons

  • No kids allowed
  • No on-site restaurant
  • 1½ miles from Dock Square and 1½ miles from Parson's Beach
