Tuck U Inn at Glick Mansion Bed and Breakfast

$$ | 503 N. 2nd St., Atchison, KS, 66002, USA

Built by George Glick in 1873, this place has a storied past. Mr. Glick's career as a lawyer, farmer, and politician—he was elected Kansas's governor for one term in 1882—significantly shaped the founding of the city of Atchison. Owner Chris Wildly has added romantic touches like four-poster and canopied beds and carved wooden-back chairs to each of the five rooms; all have private baths, but one contains the original pedestal tub. Rooms have modern amenities like television and DVD player too, but the historic theme continues with the period hues of rich golds, greens, and reds.

Pros

  • Offers some good packages
  • Cozy attic sleeps up to six people

Cons

  • No children under 10 (except babies)
  • Some two-night minimum stay weekends
  • In-room bathroom in First Lady's Room might not suit everyone

TWA Hotel

$$ | 1 Idlewild Dr., Queens, NY, 11430, USA

Built more for convenience than to elicit any sense of joy, airport hotels can be bland, cookie-cutter places, but not JFK's TWA Hotel: built in the airline's original, mid-century modern terminal, it's a celebration of the Jet Age—complete with primary colors and Jetson curves. Even between-flight nonguests will find plenty of draws, from the Sunken Lounge cocktail bar to the ice and roller skating rinks and the TWA Shop with its retro souvenirs. Mid-mod furniture and vintage posters decorate the soundproofed (of course) rooms, some of which have runway views, as does the rooftop infinity pool, heated to 95 degrees in winter. If you're just passing through and need a few hours' rest, inquire about Daytripper rates from 6 am to 8 pm.

Pros

  • A landmark, Eero Saarinen–designed building
  • Tons of amenities
  • On-site at JFK airport

Cons

Two Bunch Palms

$$$ | 67425 Two Bunch Palms Trail, Desert Hot Springs, CA, 92240, USA

This resplendent, 72-acre resort, a ways off the road and behind a security gate and wall of vegetation, is equal parts historical property (Al Capone hid out here), hushed haven (no kids splashing in the grotto, no cars honking), high-end spa (treatment rooms look like they jumped from the pages of Dwell magazine), and hippie retreat (sage cleansing, sound baths, chakra balancing, tarot readings). Stress melts away the instant you slip into an alfresco teak tub and let the 100-degree lithium-laced water wash over you as you stare at the stars, nap in the hammock grove, sip wine or tea at Twine after taking a lap around the meditation labyrinth, or hop on the table for a little reflexology or a CBD-enhanced sugar scrub. Word of warning: inner peace comes with a hefty price tag that's even higher on weekends.

Pros

  • Restaurant serves vegetable-forward meals
  • Digital detox rooms make it easy to unplug
  • Full-service spa, popular since the 1940s

Cons

  • Some rooms have no TV
  • No pets allowed
  • Can give off elitist air

UNC Charlotte Marriott Hotel & Conference Center

$$$ | 9041 Robert D. Snyder Rd., Charlotte, NC, 28262, USA

Well positioned for university visitors, conference and concert attendees, and IKEA shoppers, the Marriott hotel opened in 2021 with sleek, modern rooms overlooking UNC Charlotte campus. There's a light-rail stop outside that takes guests to Uptown in 30 minutes but most guests opt to valet park their car or park in the nearby garage to explore Charlotte. The Golden Owl Tavern is busy day and night for business lunches, pre-dinner drinks, and late-night snacks. While leisure guests can usually bypass the activity at the ground-floor conference center, elevators can be slow when many people are checking in or going to the restaurant on the second floor. A large fitness center overlooks an outdoor heated pool that's open until early fall. The University City shopping center across the street has many options for a quick bite, and it's two miles from IKEA, the only store in the Carolinas.

Pros

  • Next to light rail stop and UNC campus

The Union Hotel

$ | 611 Degraw St., Brooklyn, NY, 11217, USA
The subway is just two blocks away from the redbrick building, and some of Brooklyn's best dining and shopping are within an easy stroll. The rooms here are small, but do have high ceilings, free Wi-Fi, and penny-tiled bathrooms. More a cozy spot to sleep than a place to hang out, these rooms are ideal for a good night's rest and a launching pad to wander local neighborhoods.

Pros

  • Location near the subway
  • Breakfast included at Runner & Stone, beloved for baked goods
  • Near places that locals frequent

Cons

  • Very small rooms
  • Showers not completed enclosed
  • No bedside tables or lamps
