Tarpon Lodge

$ | 13771 Waterfront Dr., Pineland, FL, 33945, USA

A no-frills escape named for a local game fish, this lodge was built in 1926 on a sweep of green lawn with magnificent views out to sea. Rooms in the original building are small and simple; those in the newer 1980 building and the two efficiency cottages, however, offer a bit more modern ambience. Each room has its own personality; the best have balconies overlooking the grounds and bay. The sunny restaurant dishes up creative surprises. It's in the fishing village of Pineland, on the edge of Pine Island Sound, settled in the 16th century by the Calusa and near an archaeological site and trail.

Pros

  • Historic property
  • Great restaurant
  • Can dock boats overnight

Cons

  • Some rooms are basic
  • Far from other restaurants
  • Quite far from beach by land

A Taste of Alaska Lodge

$$$ | 551 Eberhardt Rd., Fairbanks, AK, 99712, USA

Though just a 20-minute drive from Fairbanks, A Taste of Alaska is far enough outside town to make you feel as though you're at a wilderness retreat. The 280-acre property, graced with fields and forested woodlands, has great views of the Alaska Range to the south, and in winter you can see the northern lights. It's clear from the get-go that owner Kory Eberhardt was born to run this lodge, and he'll happily share stories of his family's life here: his grandfather homesteaded the property in 1947, and his parents built the lodge in 1992 with trees hewn from the property. Accommodations include a remote cabin, a two-story log home, and the main lodge. Collectibles decorate the rooms, with an endearing predilection for Elizabeth Taylor memorabilia. The room rate includes a sturdy and delicious breakfast. An extra bonus, the Paws for Adventure Sled Dog Tours mushing company is on the property, making it easy to enjoy a ride or more without straying far from your temporary home.

Pros

  • Eclectic decor
  • Quiet, on-site trails
  • Personal feel

Cons

  • 20 minutes to town
  • Dated interior
  • No lunch or dinner

Tetra Hotel, Autograph Collection

$ | 400 W. Java Dr., Sunnyvale, CA, 94089, USA

With a sleek Japanese-inspired modern design, this is definitely one of Silicon Valley’s top hotel destinations. Even though it’s part of the Marriott brand (there’s an adjacent, more casual AC Hotel), nothing feels like a chain at the Tetra. The lobby is serene and lofty with exposed concrete and natural light flooding in everywhere. Right outside the lobby door is a beautiful terrace. Upstairs is a small yet beautiful outdoor pool that is better for lingering over bay views than actually swimming laps. Guest rooms have the same design theme as the lobby and emphasize high-quality, nicely designed furniture and gentle decor touches, like plush sofas or living room chairs by the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Pros

  • Le Labo bath amenities and Nespresso machines in all rooms
  • Spacious rooms
  • Excellent on-site Japanese whisky bar, coffee shop, and restaurant

Cons

  • Beds could be more comfortable

Thatcher Hotel

$$ | 13401 U.S. 101, CA, 95449, USA

Among Mendocino County's finest lodgings when completed in 1890, this high-ceilinged boutique hotel in downtown Hopland received a meticulous, aesthetically pleasing makeover favoring shades of deep gray and light to medium brown. Guest rooms, decorated in a spare style that accentuates the 19th-century elements yet feels au courant, come in eight styles and configurations, from a 200-square-foot queen to a 600-square-foot corner suite with a king. Families often book the 500-square-foot suite with two queens and a couch, some pairing it with a small room across the hall holding two bunk beds. Amenities include a bar (beer and wine), coffee shop, library, art gallery, pool, and exterior courtyard.

Pros

  • Pool and exterior courtyard
  • 500-square-foot suite good for families
  • Adjoining sister property Stock Farm Inn has additional rooms

Thayer Hotel

$$ | 674 Thayer Rd., West Point, NY, 10996, USA

Ethereal Hudson River views ennoble this imposing brick-and-granite hotel on the grounds of West Point. (You pass through two security checkpoints on your way to the hotel.) Sleek marble floors, iron chandeliers, and portraits of military leaders bedeck the main lobby; dark, regal furnishings and prints of river scenes adorn guest rooms. Request an odd-numbered room for river vistas or an even-numbered room for views of the academy. The restaurant lures crowds to its Sunday champagne brunch buffet ($34.95 prix fixe). In summer, angle for a table on the outdoor terrace.

Pros

  • Chance to stay at West Point
  • Beautiful river views

This former grande dame with a distinguished roster of past guests—including Ulysses S. Grant, Henry Ford, and P.T. theWit

$$ | 201 N. State St., Chicago, IL, 60601, USA

The atmosphere at this sleek spot, topped by ROOF, one of the Loop's most happening bars, is fun and youthful; the same can be said of the guest rooms, which are moderately sized and modern, with hanging wall art meant to resemble puckered lips. It's the perfect place to see and be seen; you'd never guess this is a Hilton property.

Thomas Bond House

$$ | 129 S. 2nd St., Philadelphia, PA, 19106, USA

This bed-and-breakfast in the heart of Old City is great for travelers who want an authentic taste of historic Philadelphia—built in 1769 by a prominent local physician (an enormous family tree detailing his descendants hangs from a wall in a common living room), the four-story Georgian house has undergone a faithful, meticulous revival. Moulding, sconces, and woodwork have been restored to historical standards; nearly all the inn’s floors are original. Rooms have reproduction period furnishings, including four-poster beds, and two have marble gas fireplaces. In keeping with the Colonial theme, some rooms are a tad cold in winter. Continental breakfast is served weekdays; a full hot breakfast is served on weekends. Complimentary coffee, tea, and water are always on hand, and complimentary wine and cookies are served nightly. The hotel requires children to be 10 years or older.

Petersburg's largest hotel is a block uphill from the town's main thoroughfare, and its rooms, some with kitchenettes, have comfortable but timeworn furnishings. Rooms in the newer wing—nicer than the motel-style ones in the old wing—have newer furniture and views of the boat harbor. Coffee is always available in the lobby, and in the morning complimentary juices, muffins, and pastries are served. You can rent a car on-site, but parking is limited.

Pros

  • Central location
  • Harbor views from the newer rooms
  • Friendly staff

Cons

  • Rooms in the old wing are dark and dated
  • No frills
  • Limited breakfast options

The Tidewater Inn & Conference Center

$ | 101 E. Dover St., Easton, MD, 21601-3001, USA

Beyond the entry archways of this stately, four-story brick hotel, an early-20th-century aura pervades its spacious common areas, which are enhanced by huge fireplaces and paintings of old Easton. Mahogany reproduction furniture fills the guest rooms, most in greens and golds. In the hotel's full-service dining room a "hunting breakfast" is available early every morning in season. To one side of the porte cochere, broad awnings shade an alfresco lobby and sometime dining area. A small on-site spa offers manicures and massages. Built in 1949, the Tidewater is a member of the Historic Hotels of America.

Pros

  • Welcome contrast to ubiquitous colonial-era lodging
  • Large property has more amenities than local B&amp
  • Bs
  • Valet parking

Cons

  • If inn is hosting a conference, individual guests may feel marginalized
