Sparrows Lodge

$$$ | 1330 E. Palm Canyon Dr., Palm Springs, CA, 92264, USA

Rustic earthiness meets haute design (rusted rolled-steel roof, open shelving, concrete-pebble floors, gallery walls, and so many accent pillows) at the adults-only Sparrows, a restored 1950s retreat originally built by actor Don Castle just off the main drag. Rooms hug a central stone-tiled pool, an open-air barn/bar where guests converge for conversation and coffee-table books, an all-day kitchen, and sitting nooks near the vegetable garden. There are no TVs in the rooms, but the Wi-Fi is fast, and the sun-dappled courtyard is calling anyway.

  • Interiors overhauled in 2022
  • Intimate property
  • Some rooms have private patios

Cons

  • Not family-oriented
  • A little too far to walk to downtown shopping and dining

Accommodations have kitchenettes that include a refrigerator, microwave, kitchen sink—everything you need. Pastel-painted walls are accented by bursts of color in rugs, pillows, and seat cushions. The Spencer Hotel & Spa

$$ | 25 Palestine Ave., Chautauqua, NY, 14722, USA

Rooms at this Victorian hotel are individually decorated and named for great authors. The decor varies considerably from room to room. The Agatha Christie room is decked out with fern-print wallpaper that has a sort of psychedelic effect; the Isabel Allende room has cactus murals on the walls and a desert-hue theme. Some rooms are small and cramped, whereas others are quite capacious. Many have hand-painted murals or faux finishes on the walls or ceilings. Gardens surround the inn, which stays open all year. During the Chautauqua Institution season, the minimum required stay is a week.

Sperry Chalet

$$$$ | Glacier National Park, MT, USA

Having reopened after a major renovation, this rustic backcountry lodge, built in 1913 by the Great Northern Railway, is accessible only by a steep, 6.7-mile trail with a 3,300-foot vertical rise; either hike in or arrive on horseback, but meals are included; it's extremely popular and well-loved among park guests. Informal meals, such as turkey with the trimmings, are simple yet filling and included in the rates, and à la carte lunch service is available (11:30–5 daily) for non-guests. The location is an intersection of Dupont Circle, West End, and Georgetown, making all three neighborhoods easily accessible by foot or public transportation. Showcasing flavors from the Mediterranean, St. Greg Kitchen & Bar serves breakfast, lunch, dinner, and brunch. The stunning bar area is a great place to enjoy an end-of-day refreshment and a selection of small plates, pasta, flatbreads, and salads.
