This beach-themed resort features standard rooms, two-bedroom family suites that sleep up to six, two pools, and a splash area. Universal's Endless Summer Resort–Surfside Inn and Suites

Opened nearly in tandem with its larger sister property, the Dockside Inn and Suites, the family-friendly sun-and-surf-theme Surfside Inn and Suites is considered a value property. Built in 1891 as a boardinghouse for lumberjacks, this historic country inn is easily identified by its two-story porch with rockers. In the restaurant you can order a wide range of seafood or regional recipes like vodka riggies (rigatoni) or greens—a mix of sautéed escarole, cherry peppers, mozzarella, and bacon. Vdara Hotel & Spa at ARIA Las Vegas

$$ | 2600 W. Harmon Ave., Las Vegas, NV, 89158, USA

This low-key property is actually a hotel-condo, with beautiful suites that have efficiency kitchens, pull-out sofas, and lots of extra space. Because the suites are so big, they're perfect for large groups looking to shack up together during the visit to Vegas, and canine family members can be included. Each one has 50-inch digital flat-screen TVs, Bluetooth speaker connectivity, and a media hub with ports for digital cameras, DVD players, and gaming consoles. Bathrooms aren't as spacious as they could be, but the built-in seat in the walk-in shower is a refreshing addition, and Stay Well rooms and suites are available. Because Vdara has a more laid-back vibe than ARIA, the Vdara Pool & Cabanas feels like a private swimming hole. You can order everything from sunscreen to tapas and made-to-order cocktails. This personal attention continues in the two-floor Spa at Vdara, where therapeutic European temperature changes are a specialty. The Vice Versa Patio & Lounge is hip and swanky; some locals actually go out of their way to visit here.

Pros

  • Quiet retreat right in the middle of the action
  • Efficiency kitchens
  • Nice spa

Cons

  • Lacks the excitement of splashy resort properties
  • No casino

Vee Bar Guest Ranch

$$$$ | 38 Vee Bar Ranch Rd., Centennial, WY, 82070, USA

This family-operated guest ranch along the Little Laramie River offers all-inclusive summer lodging in individual cabins that exude rustic luxury; winter accommodations are in the equally charming lodge suites, with breakfast-only included (at much cheaper rates). The ranch builds its summer activity program around horseback riding and also offers fishing, hiking, river tubing, mountain biking, and trap shooting. From May through October there is a three-night minimum, and rates are all-inclusive, except on Saturday, when a one-night bed-and-breakfast is offered. The rest of the year, there is no minimum, and only the cheaper B&B option is available. B&B guests, and those not staying at the ranch, may eat in the dining room by reservation only.

Pros

  • Vast, beautiful scenery
  • Plenty of activities to keep you busy
  • Friendly, accommodating guides

Cons

  • Located far from services (21 miles from Laramie and 9 miles from Centennial)

The Vendue

$$$$ | 19 Vendue Range, Charleston, SC, 29401, USA

Thanks to its gorgeous art-filled space, the Vendue feels as much like a contemporary art museum as it does a boutique hotel. Little evidence of this pair of 19th-century warehouses remains, but you will find white marble and hardwood floors, flowing chandeliers, and an eccentric (occasionally garish) collection of modern art and a rotating artist-in-residence program. On-site, there’s an inspired white tablecloth restaurant, Revival, and the ever-popular Rooftop, an adjoining double-terrace bar with soaring views of the city and harbor. Across the street, the hotel's annex, The Enclave, offers rooms away from the lobby's bustle. If you're willing to sacrifice windows, the interior rooms are a bargain for a luxury hotel in the heart of town.

Pros

  • Attractive blend of classic finishes and artistic flair
  • Soundproofing masks street noise
  • Terrific on-site restaurant

Cons

  • Some of the art won't appeal to everyone
  • Some halls and spaces are small as in centuries past
  • Communal spaces are shared with nonguests

Venice Beach House

$$ | 15 30th Ave., Venice, CA, 90291, USA

A vestige of Venice's founding days, the newly renovated, circa-1911 Venice Beach House and its nine rooms drip with beachy cottage chic and California history; think piles of fluffy Parachute linens, dark leather Chesterfield sofas, and nubby rugs. It was one of the seaside enclave's first mansions, and many Craftsman-era details remain—dark woods, a glass-enclosed breakfast nook, a lattice-framed portico, and a fleet of stairs. Each of the nine rooms is individually decorated and fully appointed. Historic charm radiates from this bungalow and the location, steps from the beach and boardwalk, is what Southern California is all about.

Pros

The Verandas

$$ | 202 Nun St., Wilmington, NC, 28401, USA

Built in 1853 in the Italianate style, the 8,500-square-foot Verandas underwent a full renovation in 2019 after damage from Hurricane Florence, bringing the beautiful mansion to its original glory with elegant and magnificent—but functional—furnishings. While the decor is formal (brightened by attractive color schemes and high ceilings), the atmosphere is relaxed. Guests can socialize on the four verandas, stroll in the garden, enjoy nights of luxury in one of the eight beautiful rooms, or climb the winding staircase for a wonderful view from the roof-top cupola—the highest point in the neighborhood. So far, new ownership in 2022 hasn't changed a good thing.

Viceroy Santa Monica

$$$ | 1819 Ocean Ave., Los Angeles, CA, 90401, USA

Tropical casual meets urbane at this stylized, airy seaside escape, where the cozy rooms, which all have French balconies, draw quite the upscale clientele. The mostly marble bathrooms have seated vanities and supremely refreshing aromatherapy products. The restaurant, Sugar Palm Ocean Avenue, makes the best of its indoor--outdoor ambience with a matching ocean-inspired menu and a huge wraparound bar. At the wood-paneled lounge during awards season, you'll likely catch a slew of celebs air kissing. Glamorous socializing also takes place in the pool and cabana area amid all-white armchairs and divans. Though the Viceroy arrived in town with the new century, the rooms are newly refreshed, with a neutral palette and mid-century-inspired furnishings that are set off by works from local artists. Upper-floor, ocean-view rooms are brilliant at sunset. A $40 daily resort fee includes amenities like a welcome drink, yoga classes, and bikes, while parking is $58.

Vichy Springs Resort

$$ | 2605 Vichy Springs Rd., CA, 95482, USA

The cottages and multiunit one-story buildings of this historic hot-springs resort—luminaries from Ulysses S. Grant to Nancy Pelosi have unwound here—surround a broad lawn shaded by mature manzanitas and oaks. Three of the eight cottages, some with full kitchens, date back to the spa's debut in 1852, though many guests favor the five Creek Side Building rooms bordering Little Grizzly Creek for their woodsy views and proximity to the Olympic-size pool. With hardwood floors, floral-print comforters, and off-white walls, these accommodations tilt more casual country inn than chic boutique hotel. Likewise, although massages and body treatments are offered, and the naturally carbonated hot springs are rejuvenating, this is more of a rural retreat than a full-on pampering-type spa.

Pros

  • Rural solitude
  • Naturally carbonated hot springs
  • Some accommodations have full kitchens

Cons

  • Pool is only heated part of the year
  • Not a pampering-type spa

The View Hotel

$$$ | Indian Hwy. 42, UT, 84536, USA

Aptly named, the hotel is all about the vista—prices increase the higher the floor, and almost every room looks out to the Navajo Tribal Park's famous "Mittens." The rooms are fairly simple, though the Navajo sand paintings, authentic rugs, and traditional bedspreads make for nice touches. Each room is also outfitted with a microwave, refrigerator, and flat-screen TV. Premium cabins are a great option if you're looking for more privacy.
