The Whaler's Inn

$$$ | 20 E. Main St., Mystic, CT, 06355, USA

This beloved boutique hotel—steps from Mystic's iconic drawbridge—comprises six low-level buildings including the new Stanton House for a total of 55 rooms. While some buildings, such as the Stonington House, date to the 19th century, a 2022 property-wide refresh introduced a chic contemporary coastal-inspired decor—white-on-white rooms with pops of color (coral, navy, or cornflower yellow), subtle nautical motifs, and high-tech amenities—while retaining its historic charm (the porch rockers are a nice touch). The Stanton House (opened in June 2025) features 10 luxe suites including a sprawling penthouse, complete with custom furnishings, a sleek kitchenette, and a living room with a two-sided gas fireplace, as well as a wraparound deck with prime Mystic River views. The on-site Shipwright's Daughter restaurant, helmed by James Beard Award-winning chef David Standridge, is the town's premier dining spot, while the hotel's new Mystic Fish Camp, serves up casual fare like fried oysters, salads, onion rings, and fish sandwiches.

Pros

  • Friendly and helpful staff
  • Excellent on-site restaurant from award-winning chef
  • Prime location in downtown Mystic

Cons

  • Can book up fast in peak season
  • On the busy main street
  • Can be pricey

Convenient, comfortable, and affordable, this Polynesian-style pole house provides a good base for exploring the area, as it's only a ½-mile from beaches, five minutes from golf courses, and close to restaurants and shopping. Whispering Sands Motel

$$ | 90 Hwy. 95, Hanksville, UT, 84734, USA

The real gems of this roadside motel are the updated cabins with warm, wooden walls and big windows, though traditional motel rooms are offered at a lower price, and all rooms have little conveniences like microwaves and refrigerators. Right in the center of town, the property is aging but has a big following, often booking up months in advance for the busiest times of year. There's a laundry on-site, and right next door is Stan's Burger Shak, which is regionally famous for its burgers, fries, and shakes.

Pros

  • Hanksville's only motel
  • Located next to famed Stan's Burger Shak
  • Open year-round

Whistlewood Farm Bed & Breakfast

$$$ | 52 Pells Rd., Rhinebeck, NY, 12572, USA

You can't help but leave the city pressures behind as you drive up the fence-lined road to this farm where horses graze. White House Napa

$$$ | 443 Brown St., Napa, CA, 94599, USA

Redwoods and other trees shade this three-story 1886 gingerbread Victorian that 2024 renovations transformed into a homelike contemporary inn with boutique-hotel flourishes. One smallish (223 square feet) room has a queen bed, but the rest, from 289 to around 500 square feet, are spacious, and some have high ceilings. The furniture and lighting fixtures tilt more modern upscale than period, but they've been thoughtfully selected and suit the setting. All the rooms and a suite with a separate sitting area have HDTVs, small refrigerators, and Nespresso coffeemakers. A few King Deluxe rooms have shared balconies overlooking the front garden. A buffet breakfast with a hot entrée is laid out each morning in a living-room-like space whose deck overlooks the pool, hot tub, and landscaped backyard.

Pros

  • On a residential street
  • Outdoor pool and hot tub
  • A short walk to restaurants and tasting rooms

Cons

  • No elevator to upper floors (but ADA rooms available)
  • Old-school B&B fans may miss the personal touch
  • Some housekeeping glitches

White Inn

$ | 52 E. Main St., Fredonia, NY, 14063, USA

Victorian frills and florals are in full effect at this handsome inn, originally the White family residence. Some of the building dates from 1868; it became an inn in 1919. The restaurant serves mostly Continental fare that includes entrées such as pecan-encrusted chicken and prime rib (Friday and Saturday only).

White Swan Tavern

$$$ | 231 High St., Chestertown, MD, 21620-1517, USA

Step back in time at this inn restored to its appearance circa 1790. Built as a home in 1733, it was a tavern, then a general store; it may be the town's oldest building. Brick fireplaces and deep window seats, an old writing desk, and pewter candleholders are all in keeping with its Colonial past. The original kitchen, shaded by a giant elm, is the inn's most requested guest room—its rough ceiling beams, brick floor, and large fireplace attest to its antiquity. Afternoon tea is served in the dining room, on the rear stone patio, or in guest rooms.

Pros

Whitehall

$$ | 52 High St., Camden, ME, 04843, USA

Although the oldest part of the Whitehall is an 1834 white-clapboard sea captain's home, there's nothing stodgy about this historic hotel as the eclectic, mid-century-modern decor shakes things up with lots of red and other bright pops of color. All baths have been updated with walk-in showers. Lodging includes a breakfast buffet with such choices as cold meats and cheeses, house-made pastries, and a hot egg entrée. A small bar serves beer, wine, and canned cocktails. In a small room to one side of the lobby, photos and other memorabilia pay homage to Pulitzer-winning poet Edna St. Vincent Millay, whose poem "Renascence" describes the view from atop Mt. Battie, which rises just behind the inn. Millay grew up in Rockland and Camden in the early 1900s and had a summer job at the hotel as a teenager. When she read her poetry one evening, a guest was so impressed she arranged for Millay's college education and set her on her career path. The inn is a half-mile from downtown Camden.

Pros

  • Fully renovated with surprisingly jazzy decor
  • Small-plates breakfast choices
  • Wonderful Edna St. Vincent Millay history

Cons

  • Most rooms are upstairs, with no elevator but help with bags
  • Walls can be a bit thin

The Whitley

$$$ | 3434 Peachtree Rd. NE, Atlanta, GA, 30326, USA

An excellent location for high-end shopping, the Whitley boasts clientele that’s just as upscale. The smallish lobby invites you to linger, with lighter takes on club seating, paintings of flora and fauna native to Georgia, a gilded deer statue and fireplace all a part of the warm welcome. Approachable luxury in the spacious rooms and celebrity-status suites—one includes a pool table—brought the hotel a more modern look when it transitioned from the Ritz-Carlton in 2019. The stuffiness is gone, and not much remains except the Italian marble in the baths. Bay windows in each room add to the big, at-home feel.

Wildhaven Sonoma

$ | 2411 Alexander Valley Rd., Healdsburg, CA, 95448, USA

Bay Area weekenders and tourists dabbling at the outdoor life but needing a floor, a queen bed with linens, and clean communal restrooms and showers head to this well-run “glamping” hideaway. All 40 tents have the same dimensions, and each site offers nearly the same amenities: a raised platform, covered porch, electricity, a heated mattress pad, Wi-Fi, a heater, and a fan inside, and a picnic table, firepit, and patio furniture outside. The view and proximity to the river determine the pricing. Regulars covet the row of Riverside tents (and the only four cabins, whose air-conditioning can be a godsend in summer), which have no forward views of cars or other tents. Farther from the river, the following two rows, Premium and Standard, look at the backs of other tents, though many are closer to the restrooms, showers, and communal grilling facilities. A market operates at the entrance, and the property hosts live music and wine events on some weekends.

Pros

  • Communal grilling facilities (also firepits at each site)
  • Riverside tents and property’s only four cabins for the most scenic setting
  • Access to a private Russian River Valley beach

Cons

  • Expensive on summer and early-fall weekends
  • No private baths

The William powered by Sonder

$$ | 24 E. 39th St., New York, NY, 10016, USA

The two connected brownstones that were once home to a social club for Williams College are now a modern, extended-stay hotel with an outpost of the speakeasy-style cocktail bar Raines Law Room. The six-story property has rooms with bold colors and contemporary style, plus free Wi-Fi, Roku devices, and fully equipped kitchens. Service is a focus here, with a 24-hour concierge. The common spaces take their inspiration from the building's roots: the Shakespeare is a polished restaurant serving British classics in a space designed to resemble a gentleman's club, and The Shakespeare Pub is a classic British pub with wood-beam ceilings. The property incorporates a pre-arrival check-in process, and an app for use during your stay, but the front desk staff can assist you. It also has a partnership with Blink Fitness Grand Central, just two blocks away.

Pros

The sleek, 23-story tower of glass and steel dazzles newcomers (and even a few old-school residents) with stylish rooms—each of which has its own balcony. $$$ | 101 Spring St., Williamstown, MA, 01267, USA

Located in the heart of Williams College territory, this newly remodeled inn will be tough to book on parent or alumni weekends, but it's worth a try. It's slightly larger than your typical inn, but does still embrace nature with outdoor firepit seating, and a lighted walkway to help you walk to downtown easily.

Pros

  • Restaurant on-site
  • Clean, modern rooms
  • Complimentary bikes available for guests to use

Cons

  • Weddings and banquets can fill up reservations
  • No free breakfast

Williamsburg Inn

$$$$ | 136 E. Francis St., Colonial Williamsburg, VA, 23187-1776, USA

This grand hotel from 1937 is owned and operated by Colonial Williamsburg—rooms are beautifully and individually furnished with reproductions and antiques in the English Regency style, and genteel service and tradition reign. Rooms come with such perks as morning coffee and afternoon tea, a daily newspaper, turndown service, and bathrobes. The Providence Wings, adjacent to the inn, are less formal; rooms are in a contemporary style with Asian accents and overlook the tennis courts, a private pond, and a wooded area.

Pros

  • This is the most elegant property operated by Colonial Williamsburg

Cons

  • Pricey
