At the end of Route 157 at 7,717 feet above sea level, you find this lodge on the perch of Kyle Canyon. All of them have an outside patio deck, satellite TV with a DVD player and a large selection of DVDs in the main office, gas fireplace, jetted bathtub, mini-refrigerator, and microwave. Murphys Suites

$ | 134 Hwy. 4, Murphys, CA, 95247, USA

The lobby's full-size, taxidermied bear poised to pounce and wolf on the prowl hint at a decorative sensibility that dissipates upon entering the boilerplate rooms at this motel-like property a few blocks southeast of downtown. The red-carpeted, 500-square-foot guest accommodations—all called suites but only some with two rooms—are furnished with microwaves, refrigerators, coffee pots, flat-screen TVs, and combination tubs and showers. Staff members deliver free mini-doughnuts each morning. A coin-operated washer-and-dryer stack occupies one corner of the fitness room, which also contains a sauna; the pool and hot tub are just outside.

  • Pool, sauna, and hot tub
  • Spacious accommodations

Cons

The Myrtles

$$$ | 7747 U.S. 61, St. Francisville, LA, 70775, USA

If you don't mind a deep legacy of hauntings (and doubly so if you love haunted things), you'll enjoy these character-filled guest rooms, split between the second floor of this plantation-house-turned-bed-and-breakfast and a couple of outlying buildings. The rooms are all filled with antiques and most with four-poster beds. A tour of the house, just a few miles beyond the center of St. Francisville, is included in your stay. The Mystic

$$ | 2810 Cerrillos Rd., Santa Fe, NM, 87507, USA

Once an old motel on the original Route 66 in need of a major facelift, the Mystic is now a hip hang-out with a funky Joshua Tree vibe that is heavy on the pastel colors and folky artwork. The rooms are simple but stylish with tile floors and soothing decor, and some have small refrigerators. There is a full bar in the inviting lobby that's good for socializing, and a large event space out back that can fit 200 people, making the Mystic a popular wedding location.

Pros

Nantucket Whale Inn

$$ | 779 Main St., Half Moon Bay, CA, 94019, USA

While most upscale hotels on the Peninsular coastline are indeed on the actual coast, this delightful bed-and-breakfast resides right in the heart of Half Moon Bay's pleasant downtown. In many ways, that location brings together the best of both worlds—a short jaunt to the beach in the daytime and then walking distance to restaurants in the evening. The small B&Bs design theme is inspired by the island of Nantucket on the opposite coast, and rooms are split between the main house and a garden cottage.

Pros

  • Spacious rooms with lots of charm
  • Unique zinc bed frames in most rooms
  • Evening wine hour

Cons

  • Smallest room's bathroom is private but accessed from hallway
  • Some rooms only have a queen bed
  • Thin walls

Napa River Inn

$$$ | 500 Main St., Napa, CA, 94559, USA

Part of a complex of restaurants and shops, this well-appointed if not showy waterfront inn is within walking distance of downtown hot spots. Guest rooms, many with river views, are housed in three structures. Those in the 1884 Hatt Building, done in Victorian style, are arguably the most romantic, with deep-red walls, maple floors and other original architectural details, and old-fashioned slipper tubs. Brighter colors dominate in the rooms of the Plaza and Embarcadero buildings. Some rooms have fireplaces, and all have flat-screen TVs, Keurig coffeemakers, and USB charging ports. Expect solicitous staffers and amenities aplenty, starting with pastries from a nearby bakery delivered to your door for breakfast.

Pros

  • Wide range of room sizes and prices
  • Near downtown action
  • No parking or resort fees

Cons

  • River views could be more scenic
  • Some rooms get noise from nearby restaurants
  • Dated decor in some rooms

Napa Valley Lodge

$$$ | 2230 Madison St., Yountville, CA, 94599, USA

Clean rooms in a convenient motor court–style setting draw travelers willing to pay more than at comparable lodgings in the city of Napa to be within walking distance of Yountville's tasting rooms, restaurants, and shops. The yellow exterior, Mediterranean-style roof, and vineyards that flank the property on two sides lend a touch of Tuscan grandeur, and the pool and hot tub are large and well maintained. A firepit keeps guests toasty on chilly nights. Guest rooms, done in soft whites and beiges and furnished with Nespresso coffeemakers, are in twin two-story buildings. (There's no elevator to the upper floors, so if this is an issue ask for a ground-floor accommodation.) Every room has a balcony or patio; some have views of the pool or a garden courtyard, others of grapevines.

Pros

  • No resort fee
  • Well-maintained rooms, some with vineyard views
  • Large pool area

Cons

  • No elevator
  • Nice enough but lacks panache
  • Pricey on weekends in high season

Napa Valley Railway Inn

$$ | 6523 Washington St., Yountville, CA, 94599, USA

Travelers, especially ones with kids, appreciate these cozy accommodations—most inside actual railcars—only steps from many of Yountville's best restaurants. The inn isn't fancy, but it's clean and well maintained, and except in high season, when rates trend up, you'll save money to spend on shopping, dining, and wine tasting. More than 100 years old, the railcars house seven long narrow rooms (an eighth room is not in a car) with a bit more style than your average motel. All have small flat-panel TVs, refrigerators, coffeemakers, and indoor and outdoor sitting areas. Double-paned windows filter out most outside noise except the sound of suitcase wheelies on the deck separating the cars. Some guests prefer the southern rooms on the east (Washington Street) side; they're the farthest away from Highway 29, about 100 yards to the west, and the Mini Model Bakery, which is on the inn's north side.

Pros

  • Prime location
  • Quaint appeal
  • Reasonable rates most of the year

Cons

  • Office is sometimes unstaffed
  • Sells out quickly in high season
  • Lacks pool, fitness center, and other amenities

National Hotel

$$$ | 1677 Collins Ave., FL, 33139, USA

The adults-only National Hotel is a glorious time capsule that honors its distinct art deco heritage (the building itself and wood pieces in the lobby date from 1939, and new chocolate- and gold-hue furnishings look period-appropriate) while trying to keep up with SoBe's glossy newcomers (rotating art installations complement the throwback glamour). Safari-chic guest rooms, draped in leopard, zebra, and giraffe prints, are found within the historic art deco tower; the poolside cabana wing has larger suites. The hotel serves as a bastion of calm in the sea of white-on-white mod decor and raucous reveling typical of most other beachfront properties lining this stretch of Collins Avenue. The most spectacular feature is Miami Beach's longest infinity-edge pool (a whopping 203 feet long), which stretches from the tower, past a series of comfy striped cabanas and poolside tables, to a tropical tiki bar and the beach.

Pros

  • Cabana suites
  • Beautiful night-lights around pool area
  • Art deco Blues Bar

Cons

  • Street noise on the weekends
