Old Faithful Lodge Cabins

$$$ | 725 Old Faithful Lodge Rd., Yellowstone National Park, WY, 82190, USA

There are no rooms inside the Old Faithful Lodge, but close to 100 rustic cabins can be found at the village's northeastern end. Typical of cabins throughout the park, these ones are very basic—lacking most amenities, views, or character. On the other hand, the cabins are almost as close to the geyser as rooms at the Old Faithful Inn. If you plan to spend a day or more exploring the geyser basins, this is a good budget-friendly option.

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Stone's throw from Old Faithful
  • Services within walking distance

Cons

  • Some cabins lack private bathrooms
  • Pretty basic
  • Few views from cabins

Old Faithful Snow Lodge

$$$$ | 2051 Snow Lodge Ave., Yellowstone National Park, WY, 82190, USA

This large, contemporary lodge brings back the grand tradition of park lodges by making good use of heavy timber beams and wrought-iron accents in its distinctive facade, guest rooms that combine traditional style with up-to-date amenities. In the interior common spaces you'll find soaring ceilings, natural lighting, and a spacious lobby with a stone fireplace, and a long sitting room where writing desks and overstuffed chairs invite you to linger. This is one of only two park lodging facilities open in winter, when the only way to get here is on over-snow vehicles.

Pros

  • The park's most modern hotel
  • Inviting common spaces
  • Open in both summer and winter

Cons

  • Pricey, but you're paying for location
  • Rooms don't have a ton of character
  • Busy part of the park

The Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandlery

$$ | 535 Tchoupitoulas St., New Orleans, LA, 70130, USA

This industrial-chic retreat transformed an 1854 warehouse in New Orleans’s Central Business District, just four blocks from the buzzing French Quarter. With hardwood floors, exposed-brick walls, patterned rugs, and modern furnishings, the lobby exudes a comforting warmth. Rooms are spacious with large windows, and families with four-legged friends will be delighted to know that dogs are welcome, too. (The hotel even provides dog food, bowls, toys, and treats!) Old No. 77 has also partnered with the New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts (NOCCA) to create an artsy vibe with a small gallery housing the work of local artists in the lobby. The restaurant, Compère Lapin, offers dishes inspired by New Orleans as well as St. Lucia, Chef Nina Compton’s home country.

Pros

  • Central location that is near the French Quarter but not too close to the noise
  • Stylish vibe
  • Excellent on-site restaurant

Cons

  • Some guest rooms don't have windows
  • Lobby can get overcrowded with after-work revelers flocking to the restaurant bar
  • Some public areas could use an upgrade

Old St. Francis School

$$$ | 700 N.W. Bond St., Bend, OR, 97701, USA

Part of the eclectic McMenamins chain of pubs, movie theaters, and hotels, this fun outpost in a restored 1936 Catholic schoolhouse has classrooms turned into lodging quarters, restaurant and bars, a brewery, a stage, a mosaic-tile soaking pool, and a movie theater with couches and food service. Enjoy the laid-back and colorful atmosphere as well as the murals and vintage photographs, and be sure to pick up the walking-tour primer, which explains why, for example, one mural depicts Catholic school kids releasing monarch butterflies. Old St. Francis also rents additional guestrooms in nearby cottages.

Pros

  • A bohemian-styled destination village
  • Smack in downtown Bend
  • A semi-secret bar known as the Broom Closet

Cons

  • Many rooms feel quite small
  • Few modern appliances
  • Rooms near on-site pubs can get noisy

Old Town Bed & Breakfast

$$ | 106 W. Bunnell Ave., Homer, AK, 99603, USA

In the oldest commercial building in Homer, this bright and cozy B&B offers peace, convenience, and sweeping views of the bay and mountains. It's in an excellent location, and not just because it's in Old Town—it's also above the Bunnell Street Art Gallery and Wild Honey Bistro—a fine cheese shop and deli. The stairs up have shifted with time and now have a slight lean, giving visitors the sense that they've had far too much to drink. In contrast though, the rooms are beautifully decorated with art and elegantly appointed with period furnishings and fixtures. The art gallery hosts occasional evening music, poetry, or arts programs.

Pros

  • Warm and inviting
  • Good location
  • Great views

Cons

  • Some rooms have shared baths
  • Have to climb a set of stairs
  • The stairs are at an angle so it feels as though you're inebriated

Olde Harbour Inn

$$ | 508 E. Factors Walk, Savannah, GA, 31401, USA

Dating from 1892, this pet-friendly riverfront lodging tries hard to please even if it doesn't always hit the heights; nevertheless, it's a good option for those who want to be near the action of River Street. The two-bedroom loft suites are a definite thumbs-up. Bathrooms and kitchenettes are from the 1980s, but have been spiffed up. The decor is big on florals and patterns, with reproduction four-poster beds that give the place a homey feel. Meet other guests at the nightly wine-and-cheese reception.

Pros

  • Hearty breakfast menu
  • Welcomes families and pets
  • All suites have views of river

Cons

  • Not luxurious
  • Location has some negatives, including hard-partying crowds and late-night noise

Olde Rhinebeck Inn

$$$$ | 340 Wurtemburg Rd., Rhinebeck, NY, 12572, USA

On a quiet tree-lined street 3 mi from Rhinebeck center, this inn has a resident ghost who reportedly appears with some regularity in the Spirited Dove room. Omni Austin Hotel Downtown

$$ | 700 San Jacinto St., Austin, TX, 78701, USA

Your introduction to this bustling, business-oriented hotel is a soaring, granite-and-glass atrium lobby. From atrium-view rooms you can spy on diners and scurrying businesspeople below. Exterior rooms have balconies and city vistas (on upper floors). The decor, simple but modern, neither inspires nor offends. The rooftop pool offers beautiful downtown views but fills up fast on weekends. The central downtown location can mean loud Sixth Street overflow for lower-level rooms. At breakfast, the eggs are cage-free and the bagels are shipped in from New York. Service is professional, if on the cool side.

Pros

The Omni Homestead

$$$ | 1766 Sam Snead Hwy., Hot Springs, VA, 24445, USA

For centuries, American glitterati have retreated to this genteel Southern resort to soak in the healing springs and pursue their recreational passions. While the grand lobby still reflects the elegance and formality of the early 19th century, The Homestead has a casual atmosphere that caters to outdoor enthusiasts. Daytime activities include far more than shuffleboard: there are three championship-grade 18-hole golf courses, 4 miles of streams stocked with rainbow trout, 100 miles of riding trails, skeet and trap shooting, and nine ski slopes (The Homestead was the site of the South's first downhill skiing in 1959). The venue has evolved from a country spa to a 15,000-acre resort-and-conference facility. Rooms in the sprawling redbrick building, built in 1891, have Georgian-style furnishings; some have fireplaces. European-style meal plans are a better value than paying just the room rate.

Pros

  • Southern luxury
  • Outdoor activities

Omni Parker House

$$$ | 60 School St., Boston, MA, 02108, USA

As America's longest continuously operating hotel, there's more than a century and a half of rich and varied Boston history within the walls of the site where JFK proposed to Jackie and Charles Dickens gave his first reading of A Christmas Carol; for some interesting details, ask at the concierge desk for a packet by the hotel's historian that gives a brief record of the place. As with many historic city lodgings, guest rooms are a tad small, but they're nicely turned out with cherrywood furniture, red-and-gold Roman shades, ivory wall coverings, and cushy mattress covers. It's also rumored that the hotel's former owner haunts the place—you be the judge.  The Parker House still serves its iconic, original Boston cream pie (it was invented in the hotel).

Pros

  • Overflowing with history, including a historical gallery on lower level
  • Great location on the Freedom Trail
  • Inviting atmosphere

Cons
