Peaks of Otter Lodge

$ | 85554 Blue Ridge Pkwy., Bedford, VA, 24523, USA

This unpretentious, peaceful lodge is so popular in the fall that reservations are accepted beginning October 1 for the following year (but it's open year-round). Every room looks out on Abbott Lake from a private terrace or balcony, and their interiors have a folksy quality. Nestled between two of the three peaks of its namesake, the lodge was built in 1964. In nonwinter months a complimentary bus takes you to Sharp Top Mountain if you prefer not to hike, and you can see the same mountaintop from the lodge's Lake View Restaurant. Rooms do not have telephones and both cell service and Wi-Fi are spotty. There are pet-friendly rooms available in one wing.

Pros

  • Restaurant and lounge on-site
  • ADA-accessible rooms

The Pelican

$ | 99340 Overseas Hwy., FL, 33037, USA

This 1950s throwback recalls the days when parents packed the kids into the station wagon and headed to no-frills seaside motels. The owners have spiffed things up with cute, artsy touches and added a small sunning beach, but basically it's just a motel—nothing fancy but comfortable. Guests don't mind skimping on space (although larger waterfront cottages are available) and a few frills in favor of homey digs, socializing under the chickee, and reasonable rates.

The Pelican Inn

$$ | 10 Pacific Way, Muir Beach, CA, 94965, USA

From its slate roof to its whitewashed plaster walls, this Tudor-style inn built in the 1970s is English to the core, with its cozy upstairs guest rooms (no elevator) featuring plenty of antiques and draped half-tester beds. Milwaukee's grandest old hotel dates from 1893. The lobby's long, high barrel-vaulted ceiling puts you in a Victorian frame of mind from the moment you step in. Philadelphia Marriott Downtown

$$ | 1201 Market St., Philadelphia, PA, 19107, USA

This bustling convention hotel fills an entire city block, and for an intrinsically impersonal type of place, the Marriott tries hard to meet special needs; it also offers some of the lowest rates in its price category. Philadelphia Marriott Old City

$$$ | 1 Dock St., Philadelphia, PA, 19106, USA

Convenient to downtown sights, this Colonial-style building is two blocks from Penn's Landing, three blocks from Headhouse Square, and four blocks from Independence Hall. Framed by archways, the four-story Greatroom Lobby is flooded with natural light and features spacious communal gathering areas. Guest rooms were last renovated in 2019, and have a clean, minimal feel, with updated amenities; the fourth-floor rooms facing east toward the Delaware River have the best views. The “M Club” lounge level offers upscale food options and versatile work-and-leisure space. Society Commons, the hotel's restaurant, serves classic American fare; the on-site coffee bar offers quick bites.
