The Philo Apple Farm

$$$ | 18501 Greenwood Rd., CA, 95466, USA

Relatives of the family that owns the Boonville Hotel are involved in this farm with three inviting cottages and one guest room set in an organic heirloom apple orchard. It all feels very Provençal—the elegant country linens, the floral paintings adorning the walls, the gardens full of herbs and vegetables outside your door. On some weekends, the cottages are reserved for people attending the highly respected on-site cooking school, but midweek a room is often available. The farm stand sells the orchard's apples and pears from late July to Thanksgiving, plus delectable apricot, plum, raspberry, and other jams, including a superb orange marmalade.

Pros

  • Contemporary touches in cottages and room
  • Working farm
  • Relaxing back-to-nature experience

Cons

  • Occasionally hot in summer
  • Few "activities"
  • No phones or TVs in rooms (Wi-Fi in common areas)

The top-hatted bulldog on the sign of this 1880 farmhouse isn't just a mascot: it reflects the hotel's welcoming attitude to pet owners. Inside, a playful attitude permeates the colorful common areas, rooms, and suites, evinced by a seemingly endless supply of knickknacks.

Phoenicia Belle

$ | 73 Main St., NY, 12464, USA
If you're into Victoriana, you'll love this restored 1875 house and all its architectural flourishes and antique furnishings in the heart of Phoenicia. All four rooms are individually decorated and two share a bathroom. Our favorite is Ardrey's Suite, which has its own sitting room with handsome wingback chairs; Violet's Suite has its own 1930s-style kitchen. Enjoy an organic breakfast on the front porch, or take a stroll to Sweet Sue's or one of the other stellar places for morning meals.

Pier House Resort & Spa

$$$$ | 1 Duval St., FL, 33040, USA

This upscale resort, near Mallory Square in the heart of Old Town, offers a wide range of amenities, including a beach and comfortable, traditionally furnished rooms. The location—on a quiet stretch of shore at the foot of Duval—is ideal as a buffer from and gateway to the action. Its sprawling complex of weathered gray buildings includes an original Conch house. The courtyard is a riot of tall coconut palms and hibiscus blossoms, and rooms are cozy and colorful, with a water, pool, or garden view. Six top-of-the-line suites extend over the water with sunset views. Rooms nearest the public areas can be noisy.

Pros

Pig Hill Inn

$$ | 73 Main St., Cold Spring, NY, 10516, USA

A 1825 brick inn in the heart of the village is filled with antiques, from Chippendale to chinoiserie. If you fall in love with that four-poster bed or mahogany armoire, you can buy it (price tags hang from nearly every furnishing). Most rooms have a wood-burning stove or a fireplace; two have hot tubs. Breakfasts, served in the light-filled Victorian conservatory or on the garden patio, are ample. Sweet aromas also waft from the kitchen in early afternoon, when the innkeeper often bakes cookies to serve with tea.

Pine Valley Lodge

$ | 163 N. Main St., Halfway, OR, 97834, USA

From the outside, this lodge on Main Street is constructed like many others built in eastern Oregon during the timber boom of the late 1920s, using wood from the original mines' construction. Inside, the wood mingles with walls of deep blues and reds, reflecting a clean, homespun beauty. Thirteen assorted rooms of varying decor and size are available in the lodge and the adjacent structures called the Blue Dog and The Yellow House. The standalone Main Shack is Halfway's oldest standing building and has a tree growing out of one side and a separate bunk room for kids. You can "rock out" in high-backed wicker rocking chairs on the porches, or take a swing on the hammock. Rather than an alarm clock, Pine Valley's wake-up call alerts the nose instead of the ears with homemade scones; the innkeepers serve up a hearty full breakfast to fuel guests for the day's outdoor adventures.

Pros

  • Well-maintained rooms
  • Recreation options close by
  • Breakfast with baked goods is included

Cons

  • In a tiny remote town with few services and amenities
  • Some rooms have shared bathrooms
  • Rooms have dated decor

Pines Lodge

$$$$ | 141 Scott Hill Rd., Beaver Creek, CO, 81620, USA

This Swiss-style ski-in ski-out lodge is a winner for skiers, combining upscale accommodations with an unpretentious attitude. The aura of laid-back luxury comes from little extras such as afternoon tea or hot chocolate by the fireplace in the lobby; there's even an on-site ski shop. Rooms are clean and light. They vary in size—ask for a corner room facing the mountain, as these have an extra sofa (with foldout bed) for contemplating the views from the large windows. Some rooms have balconies overlooking the ski area. The lodge is also known for its fine restaurant, the much-lauded Grouse Mountain Grill.

Pioneertown Motel

$$ | 5240 Curtis Rd., Pioneertown, CA, 92268, USA

When new owners took over this motel built in 1946 as a bunkhouse for film stars shooting in and around Pioneertown (like Gene Autry, who used Room 9 for late-night poker games), they gave it a much-needed rehab while respecting its cowboy movie roots, so, although there are still beat-up wood doors and exposed-beam ceilings, there are also new sink basins, tiled showers, air-conditioning, and property-wide Wi-Fi. The decor leans hard into the Western-meets-high-desert aesthetic, with Mexican blankets, potted succulents, rope curtains on the closets, black-and-white photos of rock formations, and cowhide rugs. Guests can gather at outdoor tables and seating vignettes or in a 24-hour lounge with games and gourmet coffee; there's also an event space. It isn't fancy, but it isn't trying to be, and it definitely has a vibe.

Pros

  • Western movie time warp
  • Walk to Pappy + Harriet's or hiking trails
  • Surrounded by mesas and protected land

Cons

  • Rooms on the smallish side
  • Curvy, long drive to gas, groceries, and other services

On higher floors, some of the hotel's pricier Ultra Panorama Suites feature 180-degree views of the Strip and oversized soaking tubs. Plantation on Crystal River

$ | 9301 W. Fort Island Trail, Crystal River, FL, 34429, USA

On the shore of Kings Bay, this two-story eco-friendly resort, constructed in the 1960s, is on 232 acres near nature preserves and rivers. Planters Inn

$$$$ | 112 N. Market St., Charleston, SC, 29401, USA

Part of the Relais & Châteaux group, this boutique property with well-appointed, expansive, and beautifully maintained rooms is a stately sanctuary amid the bustle of Charleston's City Market. Light streams into the Victorian front parlor with its rich velvets, 19th-century portraits, and Asian antiques. Rooms in the historic main building (versus those in the newer Piazza Building, which overlook a tranquil garden courtyard) have more atmosphere and a more residential feel. Service is unobtrusive, but not stuffy. The best rooms have fireplaces and verandas; all have four-poster beds. Top-tier suites are suitably over the top in terms of comfort. Packages with breakfast and/or dinner at the amazing on-site Peninsula Grill are a good value.

Planters Inn

$$ | 29 Abercorn St., Savannah, GA, 31401, USA

A Savannah landmark, the Planters Inn makes sure its guests mix and mingle—the evening wine-and-cheese reception is a house party where the concierge introduces fellow guests, a good cross-section of leisure and business travelers, many of whom are repeats. Built in 1812, the hotel's lobby retains the regal tone of a bygone golden age, with classical music adding to the ambience, and guest rooms are decorated with fine fabrics and Baker furnishings (a 1920s design named for the Dutch immigrant cabinetmaker); the best rooms overlook Reynolds Square and some have working fireplaces. Continental breakfast is delivered to your room. Guests are asked (with a wink) not to disturb the friendly ghost who reputedly inhabits the hotel.

The Point

$$$$ | 222 Beaverwood Rd., USA

Originally the home of William Avery Rockefeller, this ultra-exclusive retreat evokes the spirit of the great Adirondack camps. The secluded property occupies a forested peninsula on Upper Saranac Lake. Rooms, housed in four buildings, blend rustic furniture with handsome antiques and rich fabrics. Each guest room has a stone fireplace and lake views; some have pine-lined cathedral ceilings or private decks or patios. You may play billiards or darts at the intimate pub, which shares the Eagle's Nest building with three guest rooms. Overlooking the lake is the capacious Boathouse ($2,600 a night; offered from mid-April through October only), a favorite of honeymooners. Your day starts with Continental breakfast in your room or a hot meal in the dining room. Guests gather for lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner, and menus are set, but you may opt to have a lunch to go or eat in your room. Dinner is rather formal, with jacket and tie upgraded to black tie Wednesday and Saturday evenings. The deposit alone is $500, without which you don't get directions. But that's the point of exclusivity, isn't it?

Point Plaza

$ | 950 J. Clyde Morris Blvd., Newport News, VA, 23601, USA

This former Ramada has everything you could want in a budget hotel: reasonable rates and a location convenient to all the museums, plantation houses, and business centers of Newport News, plus Fort Lee, NASA Langley, Colonial Williamsburg, Yorktown, and Busch Gardens. The rooms, decorated in dated paisley prints and mahogany furnishings, have refrigerators and microwaves. Don't overlook the free shuttle for Newport News Williamsburg Airport and the Amtrak station. Ask for a room in the "tower," the most recently renovated part of the hotel.

Pros

  • Barbecue pavilion and complementary use of hotel's gas grill
  • Customer service delightful
  • Indoor pool

Cons

  • Some rooms still need updating, so make sure to ask for one that has been renovated
  • Basic hotel with basic decor
  • Smoking rooms

Poipu Crater Resort

$$$ | 2330 Hoohu Rd., HI, 96756, USA

Set down within an extinct volcanic crater known as Piha ke Akua, or "Place of the Gods," these two-bedroom condominium units in South Pacific–style townhomes are fairly spacious, with large windows, high ceilings, and full kitchens (some have air-conditioning). It's family friendly and one of the best-priced properties with ocean and beach proximity; Keoneloa Bay (Shipwreck Beach) is a great spot for family holiday card photos.

Pros

  • Attractive and generally well-kept
  • Jungle-in-crater setting
  • Tennis court, pool, and putting green

Cons

  • Closest beach isn't good for swimming
  • Few resort amenities
  • Individually owned units means upkeep and decor vary
