McMenamins Crystal Hotel

$$ | 303 S.W. 12th Ave., OR, 97205, USA

Travelers who appreciate good music and good beer—especially together—love this West End branch of the McMenamin brothers' unorthodox empire, which is home to three bars and a restaurant and is affiliated with the Crystal Ballroom concert venue a block away. Built in 1911, the old and creaky building is full of character, having housed everything from a glove factory to an old-time speakeasy to a gay bathhouse, and these days original art and song lyrics are hand-painted on walls, and the rock-star vibe extends to rooms, which are each decorated in honor of a musician who has played at the Crystal, including James Brown, Patti Smith, and Portland's very own Decemberists. Reserving a room, in fact, affords ticket availability to sold-out shows at the Crystal Ballroom.

Pros

  • Priority access to tickets for Crystal Ballroom concerts
  • Lots of bars and dining both on-site and on surrounding blocks
  • Saltwater soaking pool in the cavelike basement

Cons

  • Quirky vibe isn't for everyone

Decorated with local Tsimshian art, this two-story inn offers standard motel accommodations with private decks off the upstairs rooms, as well as two apartments. Breakfast and dinner are available to guests for an extra charge. Each room has a 32-inch flat-screen TV and a Keurig coffee machine. Renovated in 2023, the hotel gets high praise for its cozy atmosphere and helpful owners, Edith and Dale Olin. Keep in mind that a visitor permit is required for overnight stays in Metlakatla.
