MGM Grand Las Vegas

$ | 3799 Las Vegas Blvd. S, Las Vegas, NV, 89109, USA

The MGM Grand is one of the largest hotels in the world, with three 30-story towers with rooms and suites in more than a dozen categories. Standard accommodations are modern with art that evokes a Hollywood theme; Stay Well rooms include an air purification system and dawn-simulator alarm clocks. Further up the line, the various types of suites are more stylish and striking: the best of the bunch are the two-bedroom Marquee suites and the two-story Terrace suites, which have vaulted ceilings. At the very high end, the super-posh Skylofts at MGM Grand occupy the hotel's top two floors, and come with a 24-hour personal butler, separate check-in, infinity tub, and even an extensive pillow menu. There are also 29 villas within the Mansion at MGM Grand, the resort's high-roller palace. Overall, few resorts in the world have a bigger pool and sunbathing area; dubbed the Grand Pool Complex, the 6.5-acre area features four separate pools, three whirlpools, and a long, lazy river; there's another pool at the resort's Tower 3. In early 2025 the hotel announced a $300-million project to renovate the rooms and suites in the largest main tower, promising \"the flair of the disco era\" by the end of the year.

Like an oasis on the horizon of endless sawgrass, this nine-story resort on the edge of the Everglades can't help attracting attention—even if you're not a fan of 24-hour gaming action. If you get beyond the lobby, you'll find that most rooms and suites have a view of the area's sawgrass and wildlife. $ | 47 Micmac La., Machiasport, ME, 04655, USA

Grouped along the Machias River at this wonderfully secluded 50-acre property are three open-plan cabins with pine interiors, kitchenettes, and Adirondack chairs on the lawn; the historic center-chimney Cape house has one B&B guest room with a deck. Mill Casino Hotel

$$ | 3201 Tremont Ave., North Bend, OR, 97459, USA

Even if you're not a big fan of gaming, this attractive hotel on the bay and boardwalk in North Bend (a short distance north of downtown Coos Bay) makes a handy, comfortable, and relatively affordable base for exploring this stretch of the coast. Mill Creek Farm

$$ | 2348 Quarry Rd., Buckingham, PA, 18912, USA

Like most old Bucks County farmhouses (the oldest part of the house dates to 1730), this one has been expanded over the years. Curl up by the Mercer-tile fireplace in the library, pay a visit to the Thoroughbreds that gallop nearby (there are even facilities to board your horse), or gaze at the creek and pond from the glass-walled dining room. Guest rooms are named for presidents. In the George Washington Suite, the master bedroom has stone walls and a beam ceiling. The second bedroom, which is great for children, has a bed tucked in an alcove, which is painted to look like a four-poster bed.

Pros

  • Tranquil farmlike setting with plenty to do: tennis, swimming, fishing, biking, and working out (bikes and passes to local gym available)

Cons

  • If you want to be where the action is, this may be too quiet and out of the way

Mill Creek Resort

$ | 40271 Hwy. 172, Mill Creek, CA, 96061, USA

Set amid towering evergreens in a tranquil patch of Lassen National Forest, this delightfully unfussy 1930s cabin and camping resort feels as though it could be inside the national park, although it's actually about 10 miles south on a scenic country road. Nine dark-wood cabins with bright-green roofs accommodate four guests (six in some cases), and all have handcrafted beds, simple but fully equipped kitchens, and barbecue grills and fire pits. You can pick up basic groceries in the old-fashioned general store, and a casual restaurant and bar serves burgers and other hearty fare, plus craft beers and milk shakes. There are several RV sites, as well as camping cabins, primitive tent sites, and glamping options.

Pros

  • Utterly peaceful, wooded setting
  • One of the closest lodging options near Lassen's southwest entrance
  • Old-fashioned, family-friendly summer-camp vibe

Cons

  • Must drive to other restaurants and services
  • Small bedrooms and bathrooms

Mill Falls at the Lake

$$ | 281 Daniel Webster Hwy., Meredith, NH, 03253, USA

Choose from four lodgings at this rambling resort: relaxing Church Landing and Bay Point are both on the shore of Lake Winnipesaukee; convivial Mill Falls—with a pool—and Chase House are across the street, next to a 19th-century mill that houses shops and restaurants. Which to choose? Bay Point has waterfront rooms with private balconies, and Chase House has fireplace rooms, but the real star of the show is Church Landing, an Adirondack-style lodge whose lush rooms have dramatic water views.

  • Many dining options
  • Spa with heated indoor-outdoor pool

Cons

  • Rooms with water views are expensive

Mill Inn

$$ | 2161 Coffeen Ave., Sheridan, WY, 82801, USA

A former flour mill near a bridge has been converted into this inviting small hotel, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The lobby is decorated in wood accents with Native American art throughout, while furniture from an old dude ranch fills public spaces, giving it a definite Western style. The rooms are more contemporary in style and lack historic character, and some face a busy street; all have doors opening directly onto an outdoor walkway. The building has six stories, but the top four floors are business offices.

Pros

  • Near downtown
  • Complimentary breakfast
  • Historic accents with great photography by L.A. Huffman

Cons

  • Some think the inn is overpriced

Mill Pond Inn

$ | 50 Main St., Nobleboro, ME, 04555, USA

Rooms are comfortably furnished, warm, and inviting at this circa-1780 inn set beside the large, unspoiled Damariscotta Lake, where casual afternoon gatherings on the deck and hammocks-for-two overlooking the water make the most of the location. You might see loons, herons, bald eagles, and other wildlife on an excursion with the owner in an antique Lyman powerboat. Swimming is big here, or you can go for a paddle: several canoes and SUPs, plus a kayak, are available for guests' use. Don't miss the fascinating fish ladder, a short walk away, where alewives swim upstream every spring to spawn. Downtown Damariscotta's shops and restaurants are 2 miles away.

Millbrook Country House

$$ | 506 Sharon Tpke., Millbrook, NY, 12545, USA

The house, built in 1810, was remodeled in 1838 when classical detailing was all the rage (witness the majestic columns in the front hall). If the interior recalls 17th-century Italy, it's because most of the furniture came from the current owner's palazzo near Modena. Elegant marquetry tables grace the parlors and lush silk draperies dress many windows. Extensive gardens surround the house, and a sculpture garden displays works by local artists. If arranged three days in advance, guests can order a three-course dinner prepared by your hosts.

Miss Molly's

$$ | 4141 Main St., Chincoteague, VA, 23336, USA

This unassuming 1886 Victorian inn claims fame as the temporary home of author Marguerite Henry, who wrote Misty of Chincoteague. Here, in 1947, she spent two of her six weeks in Chincoteague preparing the background for her renowned children's novel. Miss Molly, the daughter of the home's builder, spent most of her life here. Guests have their pick of five bay-front porches loaded with comfy rocking chairs, and there are bicycles and beach gear available for use.

Miss Molly's Hotel

$$ | 109 W. Exchange Ave., Fort Worth, TX, 76106, USA

Once a prim little inn, then a raucous bordello, this place above the Star Café has been reincarnated as a unique B&B. Each room is different, but all are furnished with Old West antiques. Only one has a private bath; guests in other rooms share three bathrooms. Folks say Miss Molly's is haunted by friendly ghosts, which scares some guests away and attracts others. While there is no policy excluding children as guests, families with children under 10 are discouraged from staying here.

Pros

  • In the middle of the action at the Fort Worth Stockyards
  • Half-price rates during the week
  • Potential paranormal encounters

Cons

  • Credit cards not accepted
  • Not good for families
