Mission Pacific Beach Resort

$$$ | 201 N. Myers St., Oceanside, CA, 92054, USA

In 2021, Oceanside awakened with major redevelopment due in part to this beachfront boutique hotel across from the pier, which beckons young couples with perfect martinis, chill vibes, and sleek water-facing rooms. Built with thoughtful preservation, modern beautification, and an entrepreneurial spirit, this Hyatt property at the heart of the Mission Avenue Improvement Project joined with Oceanside Museum of Art to curate the artwork, and with Baja’s chef Roberto Alcocer at the fine-dining Valle. To step up the energy, head to the Rooftop Bar, or simply catch some waves in front of the hotel. The ground level houses the famous High Pie (at the Top Gun House) as well as High/Low, considered the best brunch spot in town. For spa services, head across the street to its sister property, The Seabird, and sign charges back to your room.

Pros

  • Prime location across from historic pier
  • Complimentary beach concierge
  • Filtered alkaline water stations

Cons

  • Small pool and no spa
  • Daily $51 parking fee and $55 resort fee

Mission Ranch

$$ | 26270 Dolores St., Carmel, CA, 93923, USA

Movie star Clint Eastwood owns this sprawling property where accommodations include rooms in a converted barn and several cottages, some with fireplaces. The ranch is nicely decorated but low-key, with a 19th-century farmhouse as the central building, a sheep pasture, bird-filled wetlands, and a sweeping view of the ocean. Though the ranch belongs to Eastwood, relaxation, not celebrity, is the focus here.

Moab Red Stone Inn

$$ | 535 S. Main St., Moab, UT, 84532, USA

One of the best bargains in town, this timber-frame motel offers small, clean rooms at the south end of the Moab strip near restaurants and shops. Knotty-pine walls, western furnishings, and old movie posters from the many flicks filmed in the area, give it a little more character than most motels in this price range. Ask for a room at the back of the property to avoid noise from Main Street traffic.

Pros

  • Walking distance of many restaurants and shops
  • The price is right
  • All rooms have small kitchenettes

Cons

  • Pool is at sister property across busy Main Street
  • No frills
  • Rooms close to the road are noisy

$ | 1314 W. Grove St., Boise, ID, 83702, USA

A modernized version of midcentury California motels, with low flat ceilings and square furniture, this design hotel is located in the new and hip Linen District (right off downtown). Interior features include lime-green walls, faux deer antlers, and glass-tiled “rainfall” showers. This is a high-end slice of Old Florida, so don't expect tacky tiki bars and music; do expect the sound of rustling palms and ospreys chirping. The one-, two-, and three-bedroom cottages all have modern kitchens with modern appliances. During busy season, there may be a one-week minimum. This 1862 brick Italian Victorian townhouse is in the Southside Historical District, just over a mile from Pittsburgh's Downtown. Its garden room is bright, with pink lattice and floral wallpaper, a white wicker bed and chair, and a walnut rocker. Other rooms have earth-tone, floral, or yellow-striped wallpaper. Two rooms have clawfoot tubs, and one has a canopy bed.

Morris House Hotel

$$$$ | 225 S. 8th St., Philadelphia, PA, USA

A lovely bed-and-breakfast in leafy Society Hill, Morris House is within walking distance of historic Old City, the Pine Street shopping corridor, and Center City to the north, but it's away from other hotels and touristy spots, giving visitors an authentic neighborhood experience. The house itself is a historic treasure, built in 1787 in Colonial style, and maintains its original hardwood floors and a clock that is said to have bullet holes in it from the Revolutionary War. Ask the hotel staff for a fascinating little book detailing the building's history. Many rooms maintain a comfortable Colonial decor, but with 21st-century amenities like air-conditioning and TVs. The adjacent carriage house has several additional suites across a lovely courtyard.
