Fodor's Expert Review Matsumoto Shave Ice

$ The North Shore Café

For a real slice of Haleiwa life, stop at Matsumoto Shave Ice, a family-run business in a building dating to 1910, for shave ice in every flavor imaginable. For something different, order a shave ice with adzuki beans—the red beans are boiled until soft, mixed with sugar, and then placed in the cone with the ice on top. In 2015 the North Shore town debuted a shiny new complex, the Haleiwa Store Lots. For the legendary shave ice joint, this meant expanding its original location to make Matsumoto twice the size to better accommodate its growing retail business and the always out-the-door line of visitors and locals, all patiently waiting to dig into a bowl of the refreshing shave ice.
