Vista Verde Guest Ranch, Steamboat Springs

On a working ranch, the luxurious Vista Verde provides city slickers with an authentic Western experience; lodge rooms are huge and beautifully appointed, with lace curtains, Western art, and lodgepole furniture, while the spacious cabins are more rustic, with pine paneling and old-fashioned wood-burning stoves, plus refrigerators, coffeemakers, and porches. They are well stocked with snacks and leave little to be desired in terms of amenities and creature comforts. Three-, five-, and seven-night packages are available. The ART Hotel

$$$ | 1201 Broadway, Denver, CO, 80203, USA Fodor's Choice

Each floor of rooms in this nine-story building is dedicated to a different artist, with original art in every room by the artist, as well—you can't miss the entry-level greeting Wall Drawing #397 by Sol LeWitt or the video art in the elevators that signal this is going to be a unique lodging experience. The eclectic rooms feature vividly colored pillows, furniture in fanciful yet quite comfortable shapes, and welcome touches such as white marble bathrooms, espresso machines, expandable workstations, and very soft bathrobes. The hotel sits next to the Denver Art Museum—the museum’s curator of 30 years was also responsible for assembling the $100 million in pieces at ART, almost all of which can be viewed simply by asking a staff member to escort you—and is within walking distance of many other art museums as well as across the street from the History Colorado Center. Let's not forget the incredible views from the upper-floor rooms and the restaurant and lounge. The window-surrounded, fourth-floor restaurant, Fire, serves modern American cuisine and offers an art-heavy, stylish, and inviting atmosphere, with the one-story-high, Mylar-based Light Knots by Larry Bell as its centerpiece. The floor-to-ceiling glass walls between the lobby and outdoor lounge area operate like sliding doors and are left open on temperate evenings, and the firepit, also a work of art, surrounds comfortable seating that leads to private, covered seating elsewhere on the patio overlooking Broadway.

Pros

  • Compelling art collection
  • Comfortable, stylish rooms
  • Incredible views from upper floors

Cons

  • Check-in can be confusing
  • Restaurant food and service uneven
  • Conventions sometimes overcrowd the hotel

The Broadmoor

$$$$ | 1 Lake Circle, CO, 80906, USA Fodor's Choice

Boasting old-world luxury and service, the signature pink-stucco buildings fill the manicured grounds at the base of Cheyenne Mountain, where a pristine lake, fine dining, and a luxurious spa offer one of the state's most pampering experiences. The cottages hark back to the days when wealthy Easterners gathered in the Adirondacks to enjoy an unhurried lifestyle. If you're going to stay in the South Towers, where the rooms vary in size from snug to immense—request one with a lake-view balcony. In summer, families enjoy paddleboats and gather around the large infinity pool, which appears to flow into Cheyenne Lake. At the on-site spa, try a Ginger Lime sugar scrub or the Poultice massage, a deep, heated muscle treatment dating back to the 14th century. The tennis and pickleball instructors are excellent, and the championship golf courses (which are not open to public play) are among Colorado's best.

Pros

  • Thoroughly pampering atmosphere
  • Many excellent dining options
  • Impressive art collection

Cons

  • Luxury comes at a price
  • Formal style might not be everyone's preference
  • Rooms (especially with a view) book quickly

Brown Palace

$$$ | 321 17th St., Denver, CO, 80202, USA Fodor's Choice

This grande dame of Colorado lodging has hosted public figures from President Eisenhower to the Beatles since it first opened its doors in 1892, and the details are exquisite: a dramatic nine-story lobby is topped with a glorious stained-glass ceiling, and the Victorian rooms have sophisticated wainscoting and art deco fixtures. The hotel pays equal attention to some modern necessities, such as high-speed Wi-Fi. The formal Palace Arms ($$$$) is the in-house restaurant; the Churchill cigar bar sells rare cigars and single-malt scotches. The addition of a coffee-and-tea shop added a much-needed casual option for a quick snack or light breakfast. A full-service spa has Swiss showers and a natural-rock waterfall that draws from the hotel's artesian well.

Many visitors come to this 6,500-acre ranch outside Winter Park for unrivaled cross-country skiing, with 75 miles of groomed trails, but they wind up staying for the resort's comfort and privacy. Choose from a room or suite in the lodge built in 2008, the former lodge that's now a reasonably priced bunkhouse, or a cabin in the woods. Park Hyatt Beaver Creek Resort and Spa

$$$$ | 136 E. Thomas Pl., Beaver Creek, CO, 81620, USA Fodor's Choice

With magnificent antler chandeliers, and towering windows opening out onto the mountain, the lobby of this slope-side hotel manages to be both cozy and grand. Rooms are small and simply furnished but the resort is designed with skiers in mind. Perhaps the ultimate in pampering is stepping into your warmed and waiting ski boots. With two gondolas just outside, this is a true ski-in ski-out property. Once the boots are off, enjoy a hot toddy or s'mores by the outdoor fire pits. Village-view rooms with balconies offer sunset vistas and great people-watching in the square below. The on-site Exhale Spa and the nearby Beaver Creek Golf Club (with preferred tee times for guests) also make this hotel popular with nonskiers.

Pros

  • Beautiful on-site spa
  • Cozy Colorado mountain vibe
  • Ski-in ski-out location

Cons

  • Noisy during event season

Populus Hotel

$$ | 240 14th St., Denver, CO, 80202, USA Fodor's Choice

With an eye-popping exterior design (its jagged collection of slit-shaped windows on an all-white 13-story building is meant to evoke the Colorado state tree, the aspen), this boutique hotel goes all in on the environment: everything about its thoughtfully curated design is nature-focused, from the natural textiles to the forest sounds on the elevator speakers, while its biggest flex is that it aims to be the first carbon-positive hotel in the country. Public spaces are meant to mirror a forest floor, with the lobby and second-floor gathering spaces composed of varying wood shades and earthy art installations like a draped mycelium fabric above the first-floor bar. Upon exiting the elevator to the guest floors, visitors meet a darkened hallway meant to mimic the inner workings of a tree canopy, but the guest rooms themselves are all light thanks to the aforementioned geometric windows. Much of the furniture is upcycled and/or locally sourced, and the rooms are decked out in calming muted tones and pressed local wildflower art prints; beds are comfortable, toiletries are luxe, and about a third of the rooms have built in hammock-like benches to enjoy the windows and views. The ground-floor restaurant and bar, Pasque, serves elevated American cuisine with strong Colorado flavors for all three meals and the lobby coffee bar, Little Owl, offers pastries and locally roasted coffee. The culinary highlight is the rooftop bar and restaurant, Stellar Jay, which offers a similar menu to Pasque but with a wood-fired twist, along with creative cocktails and unbeatable views of the State Capital and surrounding neighborhood. All of this would be impressive on its own, but Populus takes it a step further with its focus on sustainability. Nearly all the disposable material in public spaces and guest rooms is compostable, there’s an on-site biodigester designed to ensure all food waste created is composted, and the hotel promises to plant a tree for every night every guest stays (achieving the coveted goal of becoming carbon positive).

Pros

  • As environmentally sustainable as hotels come
  • Gorgeous, impeccably sourced design
  • Great rooftop bar, restaurant, and coffee shop on-site

Cons

  • Not much dining or nightlife in the surrounding neighborhood
  • Paid valet parking a bit pricey
  • Least expensive rooms on the small side
