The ART Hotel

$$$ | 1201 Broadway, Denver, CO, 80203, USA Fodor's Choice

Each floor of rooms in this nine-story building is dedicated to a different artist, with original art in every room by the artist, as well—you can't miss the entry-level greeting Wall Drawing #397 by Sol LeWitt or the video art in the elevators that signal this is going to be a unique lodging experience. The eclectic rooms feature vividly colored pillows, furniture in fanciful yet quite comfortable shapes, and welcome touches such as white marble bathrooms, espresso machines, expandable workstations, and very soft bathrobes. The hotel sits next to the Denver Art Museum—the museum’s curator of 30 years was also responsible for assembling the $100 million in pieces at ART, almost all of which can be viewed simply by asking a staff member to escort you—and is within walking distance of many other art museums as well as across the street from the History Colorado Center. Let's not forget the incredible views from the upper-floor rooms and the restaurant and lounge. The window-surrounded, fourth-floor restaurant, Fire, serves modern American cuisine and offers an art-heavy, stylish, and inviting atmosphere, with the one-story-high, Mylar-based Light Knots by Larry Bell as its centerpiece. The floor-to-ceiling glass walls between the lobby and outdoor lounge area operate like sliding doors and are left open on temperate evenings, and the firepit, also a work of art, surrounds comfortable seating that leads to private, covered seating elsewhere on the patio overlooking Broadway.

Pros

  • Compelling art collection
  • Comfortable, stylish rooms
  • Incredible views from upper floors

Cons

  • Check-in can be confusing
  • Restaurant food and service uneven
  • Conventions sometimes overcrowd the hotel

Brown Palace

$$$ | 321 17th St., Denver, CO, 80202, USA Fodor's Choice

This grande dame of Colorado lodging has hosted public figures from President Eisenhower to the Beatles since it first opened its doors in 1892, and the details are exquisite: a dramatic nine-story lobby is topped with a glorious stained-glass ceiling, and the Victorian rooms have sophisticated wainscoting and art deco fixtures. The hotel pays equal attention to some modern necessities, such as high-speed Wi-Fi. The formal Palace Arms ($$$$) is the in-house restaurant; the Churchill cigar bar sells rare cigars and single-malt scotches. The addition of a coffee-and-tea shop added a much-needed casual option for a quick snack or light breakfast. A full-service spa has Swiss showers and a natural-rock waterfall that draws from the hotel's artesian well.

Pros

  • Spacious and comfortable rooms

The fashionable and amenities-packed Catbird takes lodging up a notch in Denver: its RiNo location puts guests within walking distance of the area's cultural offerings and newer restaurants, while the uniquely configured space itself makes it appealing to just hang out for the day, even if just to check out the large and intriguing art collection displayed throughout the building. The lobby entrance looks like the set of a cooking show, with chefs whipping up the complimentary daily breakfast (choices include shakshouka and avocado toast with poached eggs). The inviting couches and workspaces are also the site for the included daily beverage at happy hour. Check-in is done on lobby computers, with guests creating their own key cards, although staffers are around to assist if needed. Each streamlined room is styled like a loft studio apartment and features elevated beds with pull-out desks beneath, fully stocked kitchens (including a two-burner stove, dishwasher, and convection oven), projectors with drop-screens that show what's on the TV, yoga mats, a pour-over coffee setup, and your choice from the lobby plants to take to the room. Celebrities and business travelers check into this hip property, which occupies the historic 1917 Railway Exchange Building and the 1937 art moderne Title Building, for the modern perks and art deco–meets–classic-French style. The service is similarly a cut above: room service is available around the clock; guests can use complimentary bicycles; yoga mats are placed in each room; and pets are welcome and pampered, down to delivered water bowls and access to a dog-walking service. Avalanche Ranch

$$$ | 12863 Rte. 133, Redstone, CO, 81623, USA

The primary draw of these remote, individually decorated log cabins between Carbondale and Redstone is the three natural hot springs nearby. The tiered pools are set in a pretty rock grotto with dramatic views of distant snowcapped mountains. Studio cabins are small, but most include kitchens and loft mattresses for kids. Hardy folk might consider sleeping in one of five sheepherder's wagons, with tight quarters and no bathrooms (use the showers and toilets at the hot springs locker rooms). On-site activities include trout fishing and canoeing in the summer, and ice-skating, sledding, and snowshoeing in the winter.

This Victorian-era jewel was built in 1873 as a stagecoach stop between Colorado Springs and Leadville, and can name crown princes, presidents, and entertainers as past guests; their names live on as monikers for several distinctly different and extremely attractive suites: the Katharine Bates, the Teddy Roosevelt, and the Clark Gable are a few. The Cliff House is a special-occasion getaway plump with accoutrements that pamper: bathtubs for two, steam showers, and even heated towel racks and toilet seats. Located atop the Milk Market on the Dairy Block within walking distance of Coors Field, the Maven's quiet, larger-than-average rooms help shield guests from the chaos going on in the lobby and surrounding area. The front desk is a bit hidden within the bustling entrance, but once upstairs that all fades away in the modern, chic rooms, which offer lofted ceilings, massive windows with Coors Field or city views, and art that's unique to each space (the art hanging around the rest of the hotel is worth checking out, too). Zephyr Mountain Lodge, Fraser Crossing, Founders Pointe, and Parrys Peak Lofts

$$$ | 201 Zephyr Way, Winter Park, CO, 80482, USA

These are all condo complexes—some with individual hotel rooms, too—that are in the village at the base a short walk from the base lifts. The one-, two-, and three-bedroom units in the Zephyr are compact but comfortable, and nicely equipped, and it's the only true ski-in ski-out property in Winter Park. The condos in Fraser Crossing and Founders Pointe appear larger and brighter, while Parrys Peak Lofts are set up like townhomes and offer equally quick access to chairlifts and shops. It's best to book these properties directly through Winter Park Central Reservations. If you book through another agency in town, the front desk might not be very helpful.

Pros

  • Close to the lifts
  • Fireplaces in most units
  • Close to restaurants and bars

Cons

  • No air-conditioning and only limited air circulation in some units
  • Will need a car or shuttle to head into town
  • Owned units vary in decor
